If Childers leads the NCAA in TD passes, yards, completion percentage, and rushing yards, I’ll give you credit for being the QB whisperer...

Great article. Thanks for posting. The picture of Childers right after the game says it all!

RE: Childers
Watched the game after getting home from Detroit yesterday. Yeah, it's just one game for Childers after an up and down season. But the progress is evident. On both TD throws to Brown the broadcasting crew did a great job breaking down the exceptional work Childers did on each play. The first one, especially, where he looks left and gets the safety to bite on the fake then hits an open Brown in stride was evidence of a maturing quarterback, not someone who just got lucky on this particular night. The pump fake on the winning TD that got the corner to hesitate as Brown turned it upfield was also a great play. Subtle things that made a huge difference. Who knows if he'll ever become consistent and/or dominant, but he was on Friday and the potential seems to be there. One thing's for sure: Childers is the #1 going into next year. I'd be shocked if they brought in a JUCO QB or had an open QB competition at this point.

RE: Childers
It's great that his best game of the season happened to be the biggest game of the season. He showed a lot of good things in the 2nd half, hopefully that confidence will carry over to next season.

That said, one good game doesn't negate almost an entire season's worth of poor and ineffective play. He needs to make some strides in several areas. If he can do that and this offense can be even modestly productive, this team could be scary enough to compete for an access bowl spot. Hopefully he'll follow Harnish's career trajectory and come out his JR year looking like a stud.

Agreed. If Childers could do this on a regular basis the offense would be explosive. Exciting to think about.

Niu receivers actually ran routes in this game too. Just open up the offense trust your players to make plays and you never know , they can surprise you sometimes

I was cursing when Tears dropped an easy crossing route pass early on. Maybe he heard me because after that he was incredible.

Whoa, whoa... Hold your horses, pal. Childers will not finish third or better in the Heisman balloting next year or after...
+1000 - Lynch was one of the, if not the best, skill players in NIU history.. and that's saying something with Wolfe, Turner, Johnson, etc.
I don't see Childers being even close to the runner that Lynch was. Hopefully he can improve and become a more accurate passer (and learn some touch). Lynch also had some playmakers at wr that Childers hasn't had.

By the way, I remember when 7 said before Lynch's junior year that he could be better than Harnish. I thought he was crazy (he might still be), but he was dead on before anyone else said he could do the things he did.

I was the first to say that Lynch would be better than Chandler. Look it up...
Couldn't find it (didn't look), but I believe you. 04-cheers

He was a better runner, even Harnish said that while he was still the starter. I don't think he was a better passer.

RE: Childers
Yesterday was the quintessential example of what you get with Childers, and it’s neither bad nor great. He made some throws in the MACC at key points in the game. However, many of those plays required circus catches that typically do not happen. Yesterday’s bowl game showed what you get with Childers when he is “good”... for the most part, accurate short passes; tough runs, no turnovers. This recipe is more than adequate for the MAC where NIU is typically bigger, faster and stronger than the competition (specifically on D and in the run game). You als saw what you typically don’t get with Childers ... accurate medium to deep passes which hit the receivers in stride (and yes our WR have the ability to get separation). You also see a QB who is less than good at extending plays; takes way too many sacks, and lacks the ability/creativity to make plays when nothing is there. Childers is durable, consitent, low-risk player who has limited upside, but is seldom going to lose games because of his play and or decision making. As the UAB fan pointed out, things can be a whole lot worse than consistently being in the hunt for a MAC title. The MACC was special for at least 15 minutes; yesterday was painful for basically the entire game. Those two games represent the bookends of where NIU can play. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.

RE: Childers
Childers panics when the pocket starts to collapse or his first and maybe second reads aren't open and he tucks and runs and takes too many sacks. He needs to throw the ball away and get better at his progression. He seems to be much more comfortable in an up tempo offense. When we sit and waste the clock by setting and then stare at the sidelines for 15 seconds, it just doesn't do him any favors either.

I don't know about the no turnovers part. He put the ball on the ground twice, one of which he literally laid it on the ground for the UAB defensive lineman to grab lol. They then scored another TD on a short field.

He's just not capable of leading an effective offense. All he can do is throw lateral passes, 5-7 yard sideline passes, and run up the gut into a pile of players. We need a medium and deep ball threat at QB. It's time to move on from Childers after this season, we've watched too many backup freshman QBs outplay him.

On 3rd and goal he had an open receiver for TD and literally threw the ball 2 yards short of the receiver as it skipped off the ground before the endzone. The commentators even talked about how poor of a throw it was.

So we got one good half of play out of the QB this season.
