Best basketball jobs in CUSA according to Stadium

Interesting. I agree with almost everything about UAB. Good criteria to rank with.

UAB ranks as the 4th best job behind WKU, UTEP and OdU.

Quote:4. UAB (88) – Gene Bartow took the Blazers to the NCAA tourney nine times in his tenure (1978-96) – most of them coming while a member of the Sun Belt. Bartow coached the 1995-96 season in C-USA and then Murry Bartow took over for six seasons and went to one tourney. Mike Anderson went in three of his four years at the helm, Mike Davis went once in six seasons and Jerod Haase went one in four years before leaving for Stanford.

Where they win: “History and tradition. A bunch of the guys who coached at UAB have gotten out.” – C-USA head coach

The knock: “The resources now are going into the football program, so the basketball program has definitely taken a hit.” – C-USA assistant

I just saw that on the C-USA page. I pretty much agree with the assessment as well.

We are in the middle of a fundraising campaign for a basketball practice facility. We are currently at 2 million of the six we need. FWIW

Also the Rebounders is another arm to help raise funds for basketball and I am encouraging everyone to join regardless of where you live.

I don't agree that it's taken a hit. Perception may say that, but that's because the money going into football has gone up astronomically. Let's be honest... the community wouldn't have ever come up with $40+ million for basketball.

I will say that the enthusiasm about basketball has as much to do with Ehsan's performance thus far as it does UAB football jumping into the spotlight of UAB athletics.

But again, as UAB football strengthens, although we will continue to reinvest into football, I think it allows us to build up the basketball program. When you build up a donor base and alumni/community pride, that spills over into all areas of athletics. I think we are at the beginning of that stage currently and that you will see growth in all of our athletic programs.

MANY uAB fans resented that basketball was the perceived beneficiary of the shutdown of UAB football thanks to Watts blundering raise to Haase. Attendance at basketball immediately declined then long before Ehsan was hired, and it has never recovered. I think some UAB fans subconsciously holds a grdge toward basketball because of that.

There is a UAB FOOTBALL foundation, not a UAB Sports Foundation. Basketball has taken a hit. Ehsan is the victim of that, not the cause.

I agree more with Blazer 85 , I think the team's performance has more to do with the lack of interest in basketball. Everyone wants to watch a winner, just the way it is with most people. I still go to every game I can because I am not a casual fan but most casual fans won't go unless the team is having success.

I am a big basketball fan. Since the early years with Coach Bartow.
Been to big games at BJCC and Bartow. A season ticket holder through good and bad times.
Our current coach does not seem to enjoy marketing the team.
The post game shows are tolerable. Does not make me want to check out team.
Can he display more showmanship?
I want it all. Good coaching and a showman.
We really could use a showman that can coach too.

Doesn’t seem to be his personality to be a showman, but he does try at it. Better than Davis

The problem with the argument is that the "resources" that are being put into football are new monies that would not have been seen for basketball. Also those resources have been infused into the department in the last 30 months and the problems in basketball predate that by years.

The long term solution is getting out of this conference and into the AAC or another conference with a better revenue stream so that the entire department is on more solid footing. Unless you're Gonzaga or WSU, football is the vehicle to get you there. We were SO far behind in infrastructure that we've had to get that part fixed before anything else. The fact that we've already raised 1/3 of the money for a basketball practice facility (not to mention other capital projects) with virtually no public campaign speaks to the goodwill we've earned with football.

And what's preventing establishment of a UAB Sports Foundation? I'm sure Justin would gladly share the the legal template to set it up.

Four years ago to the day, we mobilized. We fought. There is a championship trophy on campus today because WE made it happen. We led where others would not. We fought where others would not. Everyone who wrote an e-mail to the Faculty Senate, who stood outside the Admin Building, who flooded the NAS and stormed the State House - that is your trophy.

A few ran in cowardice. They snarked from the sidelines, they bitched and they moaned. They did not fight. Had we waited for "someone to take action," we would still wait and Ray would be fapping most energetically.

Stand and fight. Lead. Build a foundation. Or slink off to Dante's Vestibule of Hell, whence he assigns the cowardly neutral who took no sides, who did not fight.

Ah, but that doesn't play into the "Football kills Basketball conspiracy theory".

We stink bc our coach stinks.

The poor investment into the program hurts us as a whole, but we’ve had a pretty bad situation overall since I’ve been a fan in the early 2000s. We’ve had some really good teams over that time period, and some really bad ones. The bad ones correspond with bad coaching. We’ve had the same bad situation as a program and as an AD since I’ve been a fan. It’s not all on that. Most of it boils down to coaching.

Curious how big of a job he ends up going to. I'm personally hoping to see UAB go for a re-tread (should Ehsan not work out) rather than an up-and-comer. Seems like re-treads have had more success lately, and have stuck around longer.

I do like that Texas Southern seems to have gotten better after Davis left. They've already gotten wins at ranked Baylor & Oregon teams.

Mark Fox & Andy Kennedy were a couple of the retread names I had been thinking of. If Ingram does decide to go the up-and-coming route for his next hire, I hope it's someone off of Gregg Marshall's staff since they all seem to do well (Forbes at ETSU, Jans at NMSU and Grant at CoC), and and are loyal to the schools they go to. Possibly someone on Mark Few's staff to try and go for international recruiting.

Forbes is more from the Bruce Pearl tree than Marshall’s. Of course his loyalty to Pearl got him in trouble
