Not every good basketball player can meet our admissions standards, even if they are full NCAA qualifiers.

Why are we the second most difficult admissions? That is an issue.

I get it. And I remember the Ramone Snowden rumors. It's just weird to see is all. I'll add that I have no clue how we are ranked 9th in buy games, don't we only have 1?

The standards to get into ODU as an athlete aren’t that high

If lowering them gets us better players. I'm all for it. Maybe not to the bottom but middle of the pack is fine.

The ability for some of these schools to take props is a big part of the issue here.

I hate sloppy journalism:
Quote:ODU has gone to the NCAA tourney eight times since moving into the D-1 ranks in 1976-77. Paul Webb led the Monarchs to the NCAA tournament in 1980, 1982, 1985 and 1986, Oliver Purnell took them in 1992, the late Jeff Capel in 1995 and 1997 and Blaine Taylor in 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2011.
"eight times" and they show 11 years.
And Tom Young was the coach in 1986

This survey is very complimentary of ODU. ODU ranks #1 in four categories, and #13 in academics is a good thing (2nd only to Rice).
I like the comment about Rice being "and Ivy League school in CUSA." Spot on.

Not sure I understand the "buy games" metric and why we rank 9th. Anyone have insight. Does that because we generally don't take buy games (such as the Syracuse game this year) and thus less exposure, less chance of a big win, and less money toward the basketball budget? Or is it because we have historically paid MEAC and schools like Mt St Mary's to play at the Ted and thus hurts the overall schedule?

This is what it says;
"Programs who are bought the fewest number of times will rank first"
According to that the more times you went on the road for a pay day, the worse your rank would be. That's why I was confused we were 9th with our first buy game (ever?) in a long time.

I assumed that they were also counting the games that we purchase -- e.g., UMES.

Coaches view the ability to buy games as a positive, so why would you assume that?

It explains our middling rank, despite Syracuse being the only away "buy" game in recent history.

Think incompetence is more likely; see Flagships post.

And while a H/H series is certainly preferable, I would think they would see the opportunity to win a game at Syracuse as a positive as well. You don't want to fill your nonconference slate with such games, but I don't think having one per year is going to affect someone's desire to coach here in a negative way. That's part of the reason I was confused.
