Throughout the process, JMU was proactive in wanting to make a long-term commitment while ensuring that our staff could remain intact. I've turned down opportunities at the FBS level, and I did it because I believe in James Madison University. 1.5 million big ones has a way of changing loyalties pretty fast. I'm impressed that Charlotte can pay that.

RE: Houston to Charlotte?
Why is Houston still allowed to coach?

Bourne should go Bo Schembechler on Houston & send him to Charlotte. Just in case you youngsters don't know what I'm talking about just google Steve Fisher or Bill Frieder. Fisher won a NC that March Madness, maybe whoever Bourne picks would do the same versus having the season end in Hamilton or Fargo...

I find Mike Houston's twitter account quite ironic that he posted a thing from Bo on Tuesday where Bo talks about TEAM TEAM TEAM!

The funny part of the Fisher and Frieder thing was that while Bo was exclaiming forcefully in that press conference almost 30 years ago..."a Michigan man will coach the Michigan team"...the guy he was promoting, Fisher, wasn't from Michigan but the guy he was shooing away (correctly IMO) Frieder was a Michigan alum.

LOL!

Problem is technically, he hasn’t taken Charlotte or any FBS job at this point. We would have to fire him, and leave his 500k buyout on the table.

I think he’s good as gone, but just biding time to see if something else like ECU or Appy open up soon, which they likely will.

Unless a miracle happens and he wins us another Natty, being in limbo is worst case for us, because we can’t move on with a new coach and lock up recruits either.

RE: Houston to Charlotte?
Houston pretty much HAD to address the offer publicly since the offer information was leaked.

Scenarios now are (and some have been mentioned):

1) He is going to accept the UNCC job (and not saying it publicly yet for a # of reasons)
2) He is really torn and on the fence about leaving JMU (really likes the gig, the valley, etc) and is still trying to decide whether to accept the UNCC job and the questionable success he may have there
3) He is waiting it out for a possible better gig with ECU or another G5 that may open up shortly (to me this makes more sense)

Although the combination of the big $ he would get paired with the proximity of his family to UNCC may pull him away I still have a glimmer of hope he will turn it down and remain at JMU.

Do that and good luck hiring your next "hot coach". I hate this whole situation, but it is the nature of the business in CFB. There are perhaps 25 destination jobs where a coach will stay over other bigger offers, maybe less than that.

It is a symptom of winning. I'll take the wins vs mediocrity.

This. Making that kind of call looks like sour grapes. Both parties can still make this amicable.
This will happen again to us if we are successful. I can guarantee it.
JMU has never taken the low road and sometimes has taken the high road to a fault. I expect this to be no different. If Houston wants to coach, JMU will let him coach. He's still got a job to do.

Yep, you could argue it is a lot less than 25 nowadays. If Florida State can lose their coach to another school, almost everyone can. 15 years ago, a coach leaving FSU for another program would have been unthinkable. Whether its JMU, UNCC, UCF, or Vanderbilt, a highly successful coach who wins, moves on to greener (figuratively and literally) pastures. Had the Laycock's of the world been offered 1 mil+ early in their career, they would've been gone too. There is an unreal amount of money flowing through CFB right now. Anyone who thinks we are going to get a coach who comes in and wins National Championship's and sticks around for a decade is not living in reality. The insufferable JMU Nation facebook page has fans pining for a coach that will be loyal to JMU and think an alum would be loyal to us even in the face of great success. Not happening!

On what grounds would they suspend him?

I think they are looking for someone who will give us 5-6 years or leave for a job that the die hard JMU fans would be okay with.

for me. it's not about him leaving.

it's about WHO he is leaving for, especially given the quotes from just 1 year ago

Charlotte = 'special'? Puh-lease.

if he is taking the ECU job, it would suck. But i'd get it.

i think most people upset about this are not being given enough credit for completely understanding how this works. any coach under 50 that has success at jMU is HIGHLY likely to get pulled away. Nothing we can do about it.

We all get that. It's the circumstances and timing of this move that are rubbing people very wrong. And for good reason.

I get all of that, and I'm with you. But, I think Charlotte is appealing to him if he's being genuine about being close to his parents (which, during his time at JMU he doesn't seem to be the guy to say something like that and not mean it). I think the big question mark remains, what is he going to get paid there? If it's 700-900K, this hurts a lot. If, as some are speculating elsewhere, they are going to throw upwards to 1.3-1.5 million at him? That hurts less IMO. I get a guy wanting to make triple his salary and be 2 hours away from his parents, who are probably nearing the end of their lives and may not be able to easily travel to Harrisonburg. Maybe I'm being too naive.

The job at UNCC is a head scratcher. No doubt. It is NOT a special job from an outsiders perspective.

Here are the pros:
1. Working for Hill. He is a rising star in the AD world.
2. $$$$. I'm guessing Houston will get $1mm/year plus incentives. Probably 5 years guaranteed with retention bonuses.
3. Proximity to family. Probably the tipping point. Parents are getting older, and family is clearly very important to him.
4. FBS

Cons.
1. Basketball commuter school
2. No history. Could be a pro, I guess
3. No support. 15k stadium that is never close to full. Expandable to 40k, supposedly, but no immediate need or plans.
4. No guarantee of success in a far flung conference.

if his parents have health issues, and i have ZERO clue, just speculating based on houston's comments.
why not move them to harrisonburg? sons and daughters do that all the time. And he certainly has the resources at his disposable financially to do that.

this is more than about family. That's just an easy answer to give to the press and masses.

I think he’s good as gone, but just biding time to see if something else like ECU or Appy open up soon, which they likely will.

Unless a miracle happens and he wins us another Natty, being in limbo is worst case for us, because we can’t move on with a new coach and lock up recruits either.

Suspend him with pay until he takes another job.

Not happening!

for me. it's not about him leaving.

it's about WHO he is leaving for, especially given the quotes from just 1 year ago

Charlotte = 'special'? Puh-lease.

if he is taking the ECU job, it would suck.

Well I would say that Charlotte (the city) is a more special place than wherever the f**ck ECU is located. So maybe he meant special place as in the PLACE not the school.

His family doesn't live on the JMU campus and neither will they live on the UNCC campus. They will integrate into the Charlotte community and unlike JMU/Harrisonburg, UNCC is hardly a blip on the radar screen in the metro Charlotte area of over a million people. Though, the campus is very nice and attractive to visitors, this school is not a home to those who want to live in the basement of their mother's home like some of the schools we are a little more associated with. It's just far enough from uptown that those students really don't hang out there. Don't get me wrong, I know just as all of you, three years will be the limit for the Houston's to be in Charlotte, but he'll be showcasing his skills in front of a lot more FBS programs coaching in Charlotte than the once per season he gets to at JMU.

There aren't a lot of places that I think are appealing cities to move to, but Charlotte is one of them. Cool cool town, especially for a young couple/family.

why not move them to harrisonburg? sons and daughters do that all the time. And he certainly has the resources at his disposable financially to do that.

this is more than about family. That's just an easy answer to give to the press and masses.

As one who has tried to get family to move closer to him, sometimes it's not that easy. Some old people are just set in their ways even if there's no benefit to staying where they call "home".

Yup. Tough to get older people to move away from their "home". Been fighting that battle for YEARS with no success. Change is scary for most, but terrifying to older people apparently.

It's somewhat ironic, if that's the right word, that Charlotte will have lined up Sanchez for basketball and Houston for football.

I’d be happy to trade ADs with them. Mike Hill has made these moves since just joining this past March. Imagine what he would do here with the resources we have.
