Read on the main board that their AD said $900k was the minimum for their next hire. I assume that doesn't include incentives. So probably $1.5 or so.

Pretty impressive stuff their new AD is doing.

This is what it costs to be competitive. Our AD needs to figure out how to spend similarly. They knocked it out of the park with both basketball and football coaches in the last 12 months, meanwhile we are out here paying FCS (Football) and Low Major (Basketball) salaries.

Im not sure Charlotte is paying much more than we are, are they?

They are paying Sanchez 650k while Jones makes around 575k.

Not sure what they are paying Houston, but they paid Lambert 600k while we pay Wilder 650k. Houston was making a little over 500k and I would assume there is some type of decent raise above that.

Based on what i read on the boards, the'll pay Houston a minimum of 900k plus incentives that'll get him somewhere around 1.5 mil

Holy ****. Good for them....but, why wouldn't they go after a higher profile coach if they were going to pay 1.5? I bet that dude couldn't leave Harrisonburg fast enough lol..

Difference is that they hired Sanchez at 650k while we hired JJ at like 450k. They also got what they paid for with Lambert.

1.5M seems high, but 1M seems like what you need to pay to be a really good football program at our level. I think you need to be prepared to pay about the same for a basketball coach, or at least get them close enough that you will be paying that much by the time they have your program rolling.

Delusion to the nth degree.

The reality is that Charlotte has a big market, big donors and an almost unlimited potential, plus it is already FBS 05-stirthepot

Hard to believe he wouldn't just stay and ride that puppy straight through 3 levels to the AAC where some of them dream they will go. Lol. Probably time for Longhorn to help that non-ambitious AD up there to craft the next letter full of spin to the Rockingham County community.

Congrats to Charlotte though. I think they got a good one from the CAA feeding pond.

Granted, it's also 4 years later too. Personally, I don't think Lambert did a bad job, it was another startup program.

UTSA is paying Frank Wilson $1M a year to go 15-21 so money doesn't always buy you wins.

Charlotte is a better job than JMU for a host of reasons but I really thought he'd go for a higher-profile gig as a first FBS job. But Charlotte certainly has the potential to improve with the right coach and he could find himself at a P5 school fairly quickly if he plays his cards right.

RE: This will make some JMU fans unhappy
What's so fascinating is reading their thread on the Sports Junkies talking about him leaving for Maryland. Many doubted that he'd want to go their even though they are B1G. Then there is a lot of worry about UNC calling to replace Fedora. Some still didn't think he'd want to take that one. Then someone talked about App State calling if they lose their coach and some said it wasn't a step up.

Wow, now Charlotte poaches them. A school that didn't even play football 10 years ago. A school that they laughed at for coming into the game.

PurpleHazed and a small few are the only ones over there that have had an unbiased sense of reality all along. Just wow.

Charlotte! And Mike Houston is the real deal, IMO. Welcome to the CUSA East Division.

Somehow ODU is going to need to up its salary game to be at or close to $1M for our next basketball and football coaches. Not sure how to do it, but if these other G5s can, ODU needs to figure out a way to do it too. Rumor was BT was making well over $800k a year at ODU, so it can be done. Thats what it takes to get a good coach at this level.

Brother in law is disappointed in the Houston news as he is a JMU alum. He’s a realist though so he wasn’t churning up hot takes. Although he didn’t exactly appreciate when I mentioned 2-0, so I bite my tongue as much as I can when Dukes football is brought up. Aim High, as they say!

The next question for JMU is, if they are serious about moving up, will they go and get a high caliber FCS coach or maybe a recently let go G5 coach? Next hire will explain the picture for the future in Harrisonburg I’d have to think.

monarx, I agree.

But even before that, BW is going to have to step up his game because in 2-3 years, Charlotte is coming. That dude is a motivating machine. And his players run through the wall for him.

JMU is not going FBS anytime soon.

1. there is nowhere to go. Their last best shot was the SBC, and they turned that down.
The AAC is not going to take an FCS program directly, despite JMU delusions.
If/when the AAC expands, and right now there is NO incentive for that, they will take a G5, likely with very good basketball as a primary requirement. (that makes us problematic for the AAC as well)
CUSA has too many programs. There will be no expansion here.

2. The Cox Bill.
Not only would JMU have to apply to the Legislature for permission, that process would make any potential move public knowledge, and that could sour a target conference, as much of the conference negotiation process is traditionally behind closed doors.

3. If there was any chance of an imminent move, Mike Houston would NOT have left.

Why spin, just lie. It has worked for 10+ years.

Spending a quarter billion on athletic facilities to pledge allegiance to the CAA makes sense, yes?

I hate JMU tonight

All mike Hill said was 900k ish. He didnt specify whether before or after incentives. I expect it to be $1MM since he is a very successful HC rsther than an assistant but 1.5 would surprise me. I know nothing, but $1.5 seems like ot could be a stretch unless a whale stepped up with a big financial commitment.

Actually, from one perspective these two events may not be mutually exclusive at all. What if JMpoo is moving up (or trying to). Would it be easier for their departed HC to succeed at an program that is already FBS or take lumps with JMpoo in the transitional years when you have mostly FCS talent playing FBS schools?

I for one do not believe they will ever move up. I think they shot there wad on that opportunity.
