One of only three defensive players to ever win the award. One of the others was Larry English in 2008.

English actually won it in 2007 and 2008. He was a beast. Smith could do same if he comes back for his senior year.

We have been great with our players winning the Vern Smith Leadership Award:
--#1 with NIU players winning it 9 times
--Since 2006 NIU players has won it 8 of the 13 years; the only other time a NIU player won it was way back in 1983 - Tim Tyrrell

If Sutton Smith returns for his senior year he would have a great shot to be the 3rd NIU player to win it twice - Jordan Lynch and Larry English

THE HARD WAY.

Although I would love for Sutton to come back, it really wouldn't make sense. He's already had two mind-boggling years. I imagine that his strength and weight would only rise minimally since he's already made such huge gains in the last two years. His draft status would also rise minimally, maxing out at third round since he's the ultimate 'tweener. I think he'd be smart to take the money, get with the professional coaches and strength staff and develop his pro career.
Selfishly, I hope he's having a great time at NIU and sees hope for an amazing season with an effective QB. If the offense is as pathetic as it was this year, he should definitely leave...

I would like to know when he is on graduating. To me, degree is a lifetime, If drafted 4th round or after, not bid dollars. If round 1 or 2, would come out.

I don't see Sutton going 1st or 2nd even if he has a third big year because he's a 'tweener. I can see him going in the third round because of his productivity, but the NFL goes for ideal size, weight, and strength in the first two rounds and start taking chances in the third round.

Gonna miss seeing him play, but I think he plays in the bowl game. He’s not a sure fire first rounder. He needs as much tape against top competition to boost his draft stock. Another 2 sacks in a bowl game only helps. And if he eclipses Larry English it looks even better.

Probably why he proposed. He’s gonna come into some money soon...

Smith is dumb if he leaves. He could go at a 3rd or 5th round right now. Huge drops after the first 2 rounds. Big programs who care about there kids tell them to leave if they will go 1-2. Stay to build if not.

If he stays this team could get some national recognition next year. They have a lot of players returning.

Next year could be special if all key players return
