Wow, right now we have the smallest lineup I've ever seen from a Kent team. Avery, Williams, Walker, Roberts, and Duling.

I know Senderhoff tries to schedule home games for his graduating seniors - Jaylin Walker is from Detroit, so he has that covered. I know Jalen Avery is from Covington KY, I wonder if the Louisville game is a home game for him

Missing a lot of open threes tonight. Seems like Avery can't buy one.

36 for JWalk was just enough. 6-1.

What a finish! Credit our full-court press and Jaylin Walker going off late for the late rally.

Nice to steal a victory. Thought we had lost it with a minute to go. Good guts.

Very mediocre second half until the last minute and a half. Down 8 with under 1:30 and win by 4? Yes. I'll take it.

A big positive is this team seems to have found its identity a lot faster than several others in the recent past, however ...

Got to wonder how long this small lineup/roster can hold up come January/February. Intangibles plus Xs and Os seem to be covered. A few bigger Jimmy's and Joes would make this a very interesting MAC team.

Could be, anti-zip. But remember that in 2001/2002 in crunch time they often had Huffman, Mitchell, Gates, Thomas and Shaw on the floor and the last three weren't as tall as listed. I read a while back that Gates is actually 6'3 1/2" (the Chargers list him at 6'4") and he was the tallest of the five, either him or Thomas was a bit taller.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit
Heck of a game by Walker. In general we didn't play all that good of a game. Had a lot of telegraphed high low passes against the zone. Their guards seemed to be beating us off the dribble too frequently. It was the kind of up and down somewhat sloppy game you'd expect from a team still getting to know itself... Then they won. That's a really good sign.

I'm very happy with where we are right now and this is a really fun team to watch. However, what will ultimately define this team is how they handle adjustments from Mac teams in conference. They will be more familiar with us and better prepared than ooc opponents. So if we can be exploited we'll find it out in MAC play.

As for our lack of size, it's really on par with what the rest of the MAC East is doing. If you look at every MAC East team no one is playing much size. As long as our guards are physical and hit the boards I don't see a MAC East team exploiting us real bad inside with the possible exception of Buffalo because Perkins is a tough matchup for anyone. Akron's 6'10" guy could be tough to matchup with too, but he's hardly dominating right now and he's the only true big playing double digits minutes for them right now. Don't forget we're currently playing more size than what we played down the stretch when we won the MAC two years ago.

All valid points ... I guess what I'm really saying is Kent does not have a 'presence' inside. A player other teams fear.

Also, while your point is well taken about 01-02 ... Gerwig and Edwards may not have been stars, but they were were true bigs and quality role players who took the heat off Gates and Co. so they could go to work down the stretch.

Yeah, you're probably right that that lineup was overall shorter than the small lineup we used briefly tonight.

I believe it about Gates' height, but as weird as this is to say, basketball height and football height aren't the same. Gates may be a 6'3.5" person... But he's a 6"5" basketball player because the NBA and colleges use height in shoes and they always round up. Based on NBA combined results, shoes always add at least 1 inch and sometimes as much as 1.5 inches. So I'm confident he's as tall or taller than anyone listed at 6'4" or 6'5" on the current roster.

A couple years ago there was an internet article out of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament claiming Kent egrigously rounded Chris Evans' height up by 3 inches because he actually measured in at 6'5" without shoes there. There was no way of knowing how legit that measurement was, but when he played in the G League he was still considered 6'8". So my guess is he actually measured in at 6'5.75" at the PIT then meaured at 6'7.25" in shoes, then they round up. So the only actual shady part would be rounding up despite him not getting to 6'7.5". So the claim that we added 3 inches to his height may have actually been us only adding 1/4 inch to his height.

This probably sounds super boring... But I always enjoy going through the combine measurements and comparing actual heights to what guys end up listed at.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit
I agree about Gerwig and Edwards. Both were good, true "big men" that played important roles in the 2001/02 success. But for one reason or another, often foul trouble, Kent State often had a very small lineup on the court with the game on the line. I'm sure if I tried I could think of many other times over the many years when Kent State had very small lineups on the court. I think that is common in basketball except probably at the very "elite" levels. There are a heck of a lot more quality 1s, 2s and 3s out there than there are quality 4s and 5s and therefore the 4s and 5s are tougher to get, especially at the mid-major level. And size is more important defensively than offensively and a good perimeter defense like they had in 2001/02, can often negate at least to some extent the lack of size inside.

For a long time, it seemed like Kent State couldn't close out games. Coming from behind late was rare. Forcing 2 turnovers and coming back from 8 down with 1:30 left is outstanding. It would be great if we can have that late-game toughness all year.

It amazes me how almost every year Rob is putting together a different team with a new identity. I am intrigued and excited to see what this team can accomplish.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit
Last night's game was off my radar but I wish it wouldn't have been.

*If playing 4 guards for extended periods against certain teams works, go for it. It could make for an exciting brand of basketball. If they share the ball well good things could happen.

*I think having Jaylin Walker on the floor helps a bit.

*Norfolk State looks beatable.

*There are quite a few teams in the MAC playing well right now:
UB is 5-0
KSU, UT and CMU are 6-1
Akron is 5-2
OU is 4-2

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit
If you missed the end of the game yesterday, you missed some good basketball on Kent State's side. It's not east to come from 8 down under 2 minutes...

With 1:36 left, Antoine Davis made a jumper to put DM up 70-62...

We bring it up, at 1:30 left, Jaylin Walker misses a 3-pointer, Josh McFolley rebounds it, and Antonio Williams fouls him to put him on line for a 1-1. McFolley missing the first, and
Akiean Frederick gets the rebound. He passes to Walker, who goes all the way...

Walker makes a layup, gets fouled, and makes the free throw. DM up 70-65...

DM inbounds. Frederick fouls Lamar Hamrick with 1:17 left, who makes his two free throws, so DM up 72-65...

KSU inbounds, we get it up, and in 7 seconds Jalen Avery feeds Jaylin Walker for a 3, DM down to 72-68; KSU calls a time out...

DM inbounds, Antonio Williams steals the ball from Antoine Davis, feeds it to Walker for a 3, DM down to 72-71 with 0:53 left...

DM inbounds, Jalen Avery steals the ball from Lamar Hamrick. Avery misses a 3-point shot, but Frederick rebounds and Cole Long fouls him. Frederick makes his 2 free throws to put KSU up 73-72 at 0:32. So from 1:17 to 0:32, we kept the ball on the KSU half of the floor with 2 steals and a rebound, and went from down 72-65 to up 73-72...

From here on, Detroit Mercy twice missed a 3-pointer, and Kent State would rebound, and DM would foul us. 3 free throws would make it 76-72

REALLY ..??? ... Go check the play-by-plays just for MAC games last year in the MAC center. Without looking I would venture to say, inside the last 10 minutes, Kent was down at some point in most of them, and that includes the Buffalo game and NIU.

I folo the MAC pretty close and would say, at least last season (and down the stretch in 2017) more often than not Kent was one of the top teams in the league at closing out games or coming from behind to win.

I think if we shoot threes well we'll be OK - JA was off last night but others stepped up. If our threes don't go in we could be in trouble.
