RE: EMU to Reinstate Tennis, Softball for Title IX Reasons
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I did look at softball schedules (for the last year EMU had it) vs. CMU's Lacrosse schedule (this year).

Travel expenses for softball look a lot like D-I baseball as far as a I could tell (i just looked at the travel destinations). Lacrosse was much less travel.

If the point is to save money then drop the most expensive sport. If you disagree then you acknowledge that saving money is not the point.

Most expensive sport brings in the most money and pays for other sports that can’t support themselves. Move along.

The ESPN contract, CFP money, both bring in far more than any of our other sports.

Football doesn't pay for itself. Very few college teams pay for themselves. Almost all athletic departments are in the red and require subsidies from the U.

Oh so EMU is no different from any other schools and is actually doing something about it to help reduce the red ink?

Does any Olympic sport pay for itself? They are called non-revenue sports for a reason. Any revenue is minimal.

RE: EMU to Reinstate Tennis, Softball for Title IX Reasons
Exactly, this constantly rehashed conversation about schools & their students 'subsidizing' college sports is just dumb. Especially those targeting EMU, and it's football specifically.

With the exception of about 10.......EVERY COLLEGE IN THE COUNTRY, AND IT'S STUDENTS......subsidize their sports programs. Yeah, shocking revelation, right.

Does the overall value of those sports programs, justify the price? Apparently most schools believe so. All the naysayers can stick a fork in it.

If you are an ardent hater, or student that doesn't like it, go to a school that doesn't have sports programs. Also feel free to leave this board, join their boards, and whine til your hearts content, while whispering sweet nothings in each others ears about your moral, mental, and fiscal superiority. Please, please.

So sick of the whiners and critics and bellyachers.

RE: EMU to Reinstate Tennis, Softball for Title IX Reasons
One of the problems at EMU is that we indulge football, which we're not good at, and sacrifice men's swim and dive, which we were exceptional at.

I hear people refer to travel costs, yet the football team uses buses and hotels for HOME games. That is an absurd waste of money and an implied admission that the players need to be watched like children.

There are lots of ways to cut costs without cutting teams. But the administration took the lazy way out.

We can't be a division-1 school if there is no football. So, that's out of the question. We are not an Albion or Adrian.

That's not correct. Plenty of schools don't have ANY football, e.g., George Mason, doesn't even have non-scholarship football. Ditto George Washington.

Ooops, I could have stayed in Michigan with UDM and Oakland.

Others have non-scholarship FB like Dayton and even Drake or the Ivy League.

If UofM would agree to drop scholarship football (03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao) they could join the Ivy League.

Now to get back to the gist of the question, we could not remain in the MAC. We could, however, be in the Horizon, if that was what folks, both us and them, wanted.

I've written quite clearly that we should not drop football. Not only do I have a history of saying so, but I was involved to a small degree resisting the MAC when they tried to kick us out precisely because the football program was so bad.

My argument has always been that the football program should not waste money, especially during a budget crisis. They do. And then the administration takes opportunity from other athletes by cutting their sports. It is clearly unethical.
