From what the child has said and from what I've read, I really don't see that the mom is trying to play God.

She's not fighting to make him take medicine, hormones or surgeries; she's fighting to allow him to dress and grow his hair long like a girl if that's what he wants to do at this age, based on the advice from other doctors, counselors, and a children's medical center in their area. The kids at his school know him as Luna, a girl, and she wants that to continue to be the case if James wants it to be, which according to James, he does.

If this were just about power, I don't think she'd be making a concession on a pediatrician, nor would she be saying that she wishes her son didn't want to be a girl.

I remember a time when parents would parent, and 6 year olds didnt get to dress or do their hair as they wanted. At 15, it was hard enough for me to get may hair below my ears and to wear a van halen concert shirt to school.

Off-topic: my son had a play at school last week and one of the kids in his class had a rat tail. I haven't seen one of those since about 1985 and I judged that mother as about as poor of a parent as the mother in this story.
