Exclamation 2019 Football Roster - Realistically
(11-27-2018 07:59 AM)757ODU Wrote:  What does that tell you? Does anybody truly understand how bad our roster is going to be next year?

That is an interesting question. I'll start with the offense.

The good:
On the surface it appears that our rb corps will be better en total, albeit without the bruiser that we had in Cox, than we have ever had

QB should be good. BL is better than some here think, and is a very good fit for our system. I suspect that Williams will not return, and I am still puzzled by the Drayton Arnold situation. In two Spring games he appeared to be a stronger and faster version of BL with good positional presence, strong arm, and accurate throws. In most circumstances I would blow it off to "the coaches know something, and so it's ok". Given our post Heinicke history, I am not so quick to accept that.
Fitzgerald is a drop back passer, and apparently a very good one, but until we have a better OL, he will not be a great fit.

The kicking game looks to be at least as good, and likely better if experience counts.

The Questionable:
We lose 3 fantastic WRs. I might be otherwise terrified save for the fact that Fulghum didn't become fantastic until after the arrival of John Allen. Prior to that he dropped a lot of passes and often seemed to miss reads and was out of position.
With a stable of tall and (on paper) fast 3 star WRs, including but not limited to Fitzgerald, Ellison, and Mayo I am confident that under Allen's tutelage we will be in good shape.
I am still not sure we really understand the proper usage of a TE. Maybe Allen can help with that as well.

The I-have-no-idea:
The Oline. I really have no feel for our offensive line next year. We lose arguably our best Lineman since the Born/Morrell days in Nick Clarke.
Otherwise our line has been painfully slow. I had expected Weaver to become a standout but so far he has not.
Looking at our roster, we seem to have a lot of "beef" but at 300+pounds, some of these guys that are less than 6'4" may be, shall we say, too well fed.
This kid from Richmond, RSFr Jack Miller III at 6'7" 270 may be the prototype we are looking for. He was a standout in HS and has a David Born look to him.
I will be interested to see the result of new strength and conditioning, which IMHO is absolutely imperative for this group.

I think every one is puzzled with DA. It's a shame because he had been a 2-3 star recruit. When Wilder admitted fault with not going with BL sooner the other day he did say that BL had been at 50% for spring and summer practice and for the first few games of this year didn't think he could play at 50%. So that could be a reason DA looked the best in spring but who knows Wilder is the best in the business at coach talk aka blowing smoke up our butts. I do know for a fact BL has an issue with his throwing arm shoulder and is getting opinions on it. It wouldn't surprise me if he just plays through it and gets it taken care of after his career is done.

RE: 2019 Football Roster - Realistically
From what was described to me, BL did not have a good summer/fall practice. Arnold played well early and then fell off the last few weeks where Williams came on and played well once they went live.

BL being injured could explain his performance in practice. None of that is my opinion, just sharing what I was told.

They have chosen several QBs over Arnold, he does not appear to be in the plans.

I would definitely add Isaiah Spencer at 6-5 and fast he could be a WR/TE hybrid. He'll be a redshirt FR next year. I would love to see them shorten his stride (he overstrides), he could be uncommonly fast. Plus he could also be an option at QB. He came here because he was promised the chance to play at QB.

Does anyone still think Stevie Williams has a good chance to be the starting QB next season? I haven't given up on him yet.

They used him (Spencer) in wildcat at times. At some point, he's going to throw the ball. Both him and Anthony flashed talent. I don't think they are pegged as strictly on the LOS tight ends either as either one can be split out side. Fagan turned into the traditional tight end and he's almost as big as an OL.

I think he would have to overplay LaRussa by a decent amount at this point since we have seen what BL can do over the course of a season. I am hoping he stays and works hard to correct the accuracy issues he had this year.

Next season? I would have to see what improvements he has made during the next spring game to make that judgment. What do I know!?! 2018 spring game DA played the best followed by an injured BL in my opinion. I liked what I saw from the walkon freshman Jonah Fitzgerald during warm ups. Wish we got to see more of DA and Fitzgerald in game action.

I noticed ODU took down QB Fitzgerald bio off odusports when I was checking out the remaining coaches bios this morning. Has Fitz left the team?

Darn, they sure did!
Williams and DA are still there, as well as Isaiah Spencer, whom I know nothing about. Anyone know about that kid?

I opined on another thread that when BW stated that he was looking for a JUCO QB that we were losing at least 2 of Williams, Arnold, and Fitzgerald. I wonder if we are losing all three.

Spencer came in and ran the wildcat a few times this past year.

Man, that would be a bummer. Ive heard nothing but great things about Fitzgerald and was excited to see what he could do on the field... at QB or otherwise. Maybe he's just switching positions. I hope.

Spenser also lined up in a pure TE position.

Kid is 6-5 and fast. He was offered by several P5 schools, UVA most notably, but no one higher than ODU offered at QB. He wanted to play, or at least try out at QB, we promised him that chance and he signed with ODU. I work with his cousin, who played D3 ball at CNU, and we talk about Isaiah a lot. He appeared in the first 4 games and they shut him down to preserve the redshirt.

Never certain why he (Fitz) came to ODU, and why he had no other enticing offers after reading Roanoke writer Doug Doughty say he was the best QB to come out of that area he'd seen in years. Makes no sense. Throws a great ball.

In the very limited action against VMI, I thought he looked like a guy who would be good down the road. He is tall, seemed to have a nice pocket presence, threw a nice ball (as you mentioned) and seemed to be able to run a little. I was actually excited by what I saw.

Just watching highlights, I would imagine its a combo of:

Long windup
Not very quick runner
Low level competition

Having said that, I've heard from multiple people that they are excited about his potential.

Roanoke isn't exactly a recruiting hotbed.

Roanoke isn't exactly a recruiting hotbed.

They do love their football out there though. And anything that can spread the ODU name west of 95 is a good thing. They have good school systems out there too with kids who would make great Monarchs. I was out there visiting some friends recently and ODU may as well be Averett as far as kids out there are concerned. My buddy's son is really into his HS marching band and has his sights set on JMU for that reason. VT is an option too. They used to live in Suffolk and ODU isn't even on his radar.
