Joreel Baum is a 3 star recruit (84), Elonte Jones is a 3 star recruit (83), Elijah Golston is a 3 star recruit (81) JUCO, Kevin Dameron is a 3 star recruit (80). Kadere Kounta is a 2 star recruit (79). McDuffie was one of our top recruits last year....3 star 81 rating.

Of course, I based in off our current system. The new coach may run a 4-3 or 3-4 and then we are talking about different schemes and positions. Based on a 4 DE alignment, there could be 10 DEs on the roster......4 true freshman, 1 redshirt freshman, 2 redshirt sophomores, 1 junior (redshirt?), and 1 senior (WIlder).

They are going to still be awfully young either way.

I was using the info from the ODU roster, and the hard commit list at 247. Any recruits not on that list are suspect, IMHO.
A 3-4 would require a Nose Tackle that we don't yet have with the departure of Toal, as well as 3-4 specific linebackers that I am not sure we have.

HIGH SCHOOL: A three-star recruit by 247 sports (Valle)

https://247sports.com/college/old-domini...l/Commits/

Wilder said the other day he wants a 3-4 defensive minded coach.

Normally a 3-4 is pretty specific.
The most important position, IMHO, is the nose tackle and not many players can do that job. Further, the other two down lineman are usually very large. The position is called DE but the players are usually tackles.
The linebacker position is very demanding as well, as the LB is required to be able to rush, defend the run, and defend the pass. LOL they really need to be able to tackle 05-stirthepot
It might be a year or two, or even 3 before a 3-4 could be installed here.
04-cheers

I did not hear that. In his press conference he said he wants to play more 3 down, but wants the flexibility to play either 3 down or 4 down.

Yeah, I may have jumped on that term prematurely.

In any event, we have returning only 4 DEs, 2 RS Freshmen, one FR and a Sophomore.
FR Oshea Jackson has not played a down,
So Sam White played in 3 games in 2017. I cannot find that he played at all in 2018
RFR James Valle III saw limited action in 6 games 2018
Only RFR Marcus Haynes had significant playing time, apparently seeing action is all 12 games in 2018.

That is seriously worrisome.

We will get Miles Fox back next year. He will be a big help. The interior lineman was terrible after Fox was injured. I thought Pat Toal would have had a better senior year.

From bad to worse. Fox to Wake Forest.

Judging from 2016 and 2017, our Dline looked to be excellent for 2018.
Sadly that was not the case, as, especially the interior, seemed to completely break down.
Some of this can be attributed to the loss of Miles Fox after the VT game.
However, even at full strength, Liberty put up 238 yds on the ground.

So, we lose:
DE - all everything Oshane Ximines, Daniel Appough, and Tim Ward.
Those are huge losses.
Remaining are:
6'4" 215lb RFR non rated Marcus Haynes, At 215 he is likely a pass rush specialist (weak side defensive end)
6'5" 245lb Fr Oshea Jackson, a 2 star, he shows promise
6'4" 235lb RFR James Valle III, a 3 star who will likely excel.
6'3" 250lb So Sam White, he has had some limited playing time, but.....
So far one commit for 2019, also a WDE is 6'4" non rated Elonte Jones.

We lose:
DT - Ryan Londree, Pat Toal, and Brandon Tyson.
Fortunately, the best of them, Miles Fox returns from a medical redshirt.
Remaining are:
6'2" 275lb non rated So Ty-Kee McCullers, very limited playing time
6'5" 275lb non rated Fr Sokoya McDuffie, played vs VMI
6'3' 270lb 2 star So Jeremy Meiser, returning starter
6'2" 275lb 2 star So. Juwan Ross, extensive playing time
6'5" 306lb 2 star Jr Mufu Taiwo, played is all games in n2018
6'4" 280lb 2 star RFR cameron Washington, played vs MTSU, VMI
So far one commit for 2019, 6'4: 315lb 3 star Cole Birdow

With Miles Fox coming back, and Meiser, Ross and Taiwo hopefully
improved we may be ok. Cameron Washington may surprise. At least we have some depth at DT.

Honestly, DE looks to be catastrophic beyond words. We have only three true DEs, including a Fr and RFR, with very little experience, and possible only two will be game ready. We have no depth whatsoever.

With Fox gone and Meiser on IR, that leaves Ross/Taiwo and Wahington/McDuffie/McCullers plus commits Birdow and JUCO Heil until after the spring game at least.

Honestly I don’t know a lot about college fb other than watching the games. Is this entire JUCO movement a desperation move to win a few games next year? What do the really serious college fb fans think?

Some purists believe that building a program with JUCOS and transfers is dishonorable, almost tantamount to cheating.

However,
JUCO transfers can provide an instantly more mature and developed player for a particular position.
More generally, it is a quick way to build a competitive program.

Alabama and Auburn, among others have had success with JUCOs.
https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-fo...transfers/

There are two keys to being successful at going the JUCO route.
1. Being able to assess talent within the context of their junior college competition.
2. Understanding the reasons that some JUCO players are playing at the JUCO level; be it skill level, maturity, academics, or other possible "baggage".

Auburn and Bama are getting the cream of the crop when it comes to juco recruits.
I haven’t looked at all of the “offers” these guys got, but I doubt we are beating out P5 schools for them.

I think it is the only answer to losing so much of your coaching staff and so many contributors on the field, while going into your most grown-up schedule you've ever faced as a football program. If it works and ODU makes a bowl game, the team and coaching staff will deserve a lot of credit.

I think another thing is that JuCo's have the "Lower ceiling higher floor" type of dynamic. Jucos can prop up a team in weak areas, but are hardly ever as good as being able to bring in a player from HS and developing them in your system for 4/5 years.

They typically make a more immediate impact as they are further along physically and you get to scout them for 1-2 years in leagues that are typically a little better than high school so you may have a better idea of what you are getting than a high school senior.

Larry Fedora rode JuCos at Southern Miss to a league title in 2011, but his overreliance on them left the cupboard bare when he took the UNC job.
