RE: Ball State QB & RB to Transfer
The starting QB (Riley Neal) and RB (James Gilbert) both transferring is a big time ouch for an already struggling Ball St.! The story does not even give a hint for the reasons. I think the transfer rules recently changed, and Ball St. (in this case) cannot limit where they transfer to. I am not sure but I seem to recall that changed recently.

"Because Neal and Gilbert both redshirted in 2017 due to injury, they are expected to be eligible to play right away at an FBS school as a graduate transfer."

RE: Ball State QB & RB to Transfer
These guys are both looking to do what JJ did, find a P5 team to get better / more exposure for a run at the NFL. Not sure NIU is in the running. Would be great to land him, although our WRs are just as much of the problem as the QB, and I’m not sure who will fill the shoes of Wesley and Brown.

Wow, that's a big hit. And not a good precedent, with JJ leaving us last year, and now these guys leaving Ball State. But I guess you gotta have guys that want to be there. I don't understand how they are eligible right away though - they haven't graduated, right?

That could be what they are thinking. However, the grass is not always greener as they say. That was JJ's plan but that did not work out so well for him. Unless I missed it JJ only had one game where he got a lot of reps and played well; the last TCU game. Riley Neal has to be careful; he could pick a team and he get beat out for the starting QB. He has to look for a good team that needs help at QB - what team did I just describe? True, our WRs are struggling. However, a good QB can makes look WRs look better as we have seen this year. Riley Neal's stats are not that good; he had better stats as a SO and there was talk he could get beat out in his senior year. If he came here would be win the starting QB job? I think he would have a good shot and think he would help with the O, but he is not the second coming. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/pla...eal-1.html

RE: Ball State QB & RB to Transfer
Does the old NCAA rules still exist where a school cannot give a scholarship to someone who transfers intra-conference?

RE: Ball State QB & RB to Transfer
It is not such a good thing if this leads to MAC schools trying to pick off good players from other MAC teams that are struggling. I know that the world has moved on and that you cannot put this genie back in the bottle but I miss the days where players committed to schools, honored their commitments and stayed throughout their eligibility. It needs to be a two way street and schools need to honor their commitments as well.

Coach Novak slowly built credibility with high school coaches by honoring his word and once offered never pulling a scholarship even if a player was injured their senior year in High School. Many HS coaches were comfortable recommending NIU to good/great players that were overlooked by bigger schools.

I guess that once a player has sought a divorce it is ethically OK to woo them but in my mind there is something seamy about these situations.

Can't imagine they leave Ball State to go to another MAC team.
