This is a really huge step for any head coach, much less a mid-major. Credit Senderoff/staff with taking the leap.
But there are also some program/institutional benefits, nationally, if Bennett is any kind of productive player at all.
For all the athletic negatives (football/softball) KSU admin has had to deal with in recent years, will be interesting to see if the school is proactive, reactive or just hide in the closet with this going forward.

I read a similar article some time ago, probably back when he verbally committed. That's great. What's the WORST that can happen? That he isn't very productive? If so, big deal. There have been plenty of those at Kent State and everywhere else.

Did the first line of that article rub anyone else the wrong way? "Kalin Bennett may not be a game-changer at Kent State.". Maybe a tad to early to come to that conclusion?
Bennett is going to come with a whole set of challenges that our coaches and players have to adjust to for sure, but he also presents some unique advantages outside of creating positive press. I imagine, if they think he'd benefit from it, redshirting is an option. Since it sounds like he craves an environment he's familiar and comfortable with, if it works out here for four years he's probably very unlikely to bolt as a grad transfer.
On the court, he'll be challenged with trying to fit into the modern game that's obsoleting bigger heavier post players. However, Sendy is known for developing big men and has had plenty of success with bigs that aren't super mobile. Plus, having overcome all he's overcome to get to this point I have to imagine work ethic won't be a concern.

I had the same thought, but I think it was just the writer trying to come up with a clever hook, a juxtaposition to lead into the story. I think the point he was trying to make was that basketball is secondary to the more important issues this student-athlete faces, not a comment on his basketball skills. The rest of the article seems to support that idea. The lede just wasn’t very clear.
A friend of mines son played with Bennett at LR Christian. Here is what he said to me a few days ago when the first articles were coming out about him.
"Proud of him. He’s somewhat frustrating because he will get the absolute dumbest fouls. Think he fouled of nearly every game last year. He’ll get real mad over the silliest of things...but then he’ll power dunk and post up real strong and score and you’re like “boy, i wish he could do that every time!”"

Sounds like a situational substitute and all teams need one. I am really proud that we were the one to step forward.

From Bennett's Twitter account:
"I just want to say one thing I had offers before Kent State and before prep school but the reason Kent and others recruited me isn’t because of my Autism and don’t get me wrong it’s cool to make history but they wanted me because I CAN HOOP AND I LOVE PLAYING BASKETBALL"

I'm glad that Kent has programs in place to assist students on the autism spectrum. It's close to me, so I hope Bennett success on the court, but more importantly, in the classroom and in life.

The final story tonight on the CBS Evening News - always a feel good story - was about Bennett signing with KSU

The university -and higher ed in general- are taking huge steps to attract and support students on the autism spectrum.

A slightly longer story has now appeared on Lester Holt's NBC News

Yep, my younger daughter told me about it unprompted and we live near Chicago, so it is getting good exposure. Maybe I can get her thinking to go to Kent, too (my older daughter is already thinking Kent or Ohio St (gag, what did I do wrong as a parent?)).

Nice story about 2019 recruit Jeremiah Hernandez. Doing good things on, & off, the court.
