RE: Ken Broo and Ken Singleton
My problem with the local media is that they spend so much time covering 2 professional teams that are pretty schittily run and don't spend the time on the D1 athletic teams with the city's name on it. They wear rosy glasses with the pro teams and love to throw shade on UC. Coverage of UC sports is inconsistent and generally goes like this:

- If UC is playing a "P"5 team - UC doesn't have a chance because they aren't one of the big boys.
- If UC is playing Miami - UC should win because they are the big boy.
- If UC is playing Xavier - UC is the big school and everybody loves an underdog so it is a good story when X wins or is considered the better program. X is the best program in the city.
- Coverage of the basketball team - UC is expected to go to the tournament so anything less is failure.
- When the team loses in the tournament - UC isn't a big boy so they aren't expected to make it far.
- If UC fans want a better coach because they have plateaued - who else could you get who would want to coach at UC in this conference...nobody.
- Conference realignment - UC isn't bigtime enough to be in a "P" conference and wouldn't do well in a bigger conference (we are and we have).

Sports new media, talk show personalities and print media is weak in this town. Hence Ken Broo is even somewhat relevant. In this size or market you should either be good or a homer. Strange to be neither.

When does anyone in this market EVER break a story....never. When do you see local guys on National shows... hardly ever.

IIRC the Bengals and Reds get so much coverage because the time is bought out by their advertisers. On WLW/1530 they have 3-4 dedicated blocked evenings like the Bengals Pep Rally, the Roundtable Show, etc. that are all bought and paid for. Leaves no time for UC or other sports.

With respect to UC/Xavier, I think a significant factor is that fact that a lot of the GCL alums have a soft spot for the Catholic institution in town (no offense to many of you who are products of the GCL). A lot of those alums are employed in management position at the Enquirer, the radio station, the local networks, etc.

Finally, no disrespect to the dead, but guys like Tom Groeshen and Bill Koch who worked for the Enquirer and The Post for the last 30 years+ always wanted to come off as "impartial observers", not homers. They went out of their way to do so in fact. This doesn't happen in other cities with FBS programs, including schools in the AAC. The coverage the conference gets as a whole in the papers in Dallas, Orlando, Tampa, Memphis, etc. knocks this out the water. Its frankly embarrassing to see breaking stories always coming out of those markets and to see the Enquirer with a "Me Too" type article a couple days later.

I don't subscribe but Jason Williams is doing a good job covering us at the Athletic, by all accounts.

The bigger issue at play is pretty simple; Cincinnati sports media is subpar to begin with. Though I do like what Charlie Hatch and Pat Brennan do for FC Cincinnati (i.e. they actually understand the sport, follow it religiously, and subsequently provide quality articles on behalf of the club). I think Brennan wrote up the ECU recap for us the other day and it was pretty well done.

Pat Brennan isn't better for FCC than any of the other subpar beat writers in the city. He brings no real insight to his writing and basically just prints what the team gives him.

Now Cincy Soccer Talk does provide great insight and is an asset to our local media.

I asked him about Frank Solich possibly being the next UC HC (since Solich was out of work and he was a rumored target for UC). He laughed and said (exact statement) "Frank Solich wouldn't come to Cincinnati. People are more interested in watching Heidi than UC Football." The store was on W. McMillan, right next to campus. Football wasn't popular then but the dude obviously doesn't know his audience (I was also wearing a UC hat). In hindsight, I'm glad we didn't hire Solich, although you could argue we kind of did in Tuberville. Bottom line - Broo has never liked UC football and will only cover them when he has to. I'm sure he was thrilled with the outcome of the UCF game.

If you saw the attendance at the game Fri. night, why would you not believe this ? Where else would a 9-2 team on Senior night have a stadium that is a quarter filled ? Hell, soccer has outdrawn the 10-2 Cats.

Friday’s game was a TV event. It was not a gate event other than the guaranteed cash from the Club and suites.

The game was definitely not worth a 500 mile drive.

Stop equating attendance with interest. Didn’t the Cincinnati market draw very well for the UCF game last week. Try making Thanksgiving weekends plans around a football game that has its game time announced six days before the date they play.

We can’t all be hardcore fans. Heck I am a hardcore fan and have missed games due to family or work commitments. I thank everyone that does attend games, buys gear, watches on TV, listen to the radio, and participates on a UC sports forum.

I don't think they were watching Heidi.

George Vogel is good. I think that's about it.

Whatever happened to Dennis Jansen? He was very pro-UC. I live away from Cincy so not sure if he's still around.

It looks bad in Nippert. It looks bad in the new Arena. And it definitely looks bad on TV.

UC's biggest issue is not the bandwagon fan or even walk up sales. I was amazed how full the last four south sections of the Shank Pavilion was on Friday afternoon.

UC's biggest issue is so many of the big donors simply don't use their seats. And because of inconvenience, or lack of thought, or just plain snobbery those premium seats remain empty. I've heard ushers tell me that many season ticket holders only go to the Xavier type games for basketball and the good weather, big name, homecoming type games for football. And a few have even complained seeing someone sitting in their seats on TV.

I know this can definitely happen in Cincinnati because it happened to me several years ago as a volunteer at the ATP. I was taking a lunch break sitting in the baking sun watching a few games from the third row. Some box owner actually called the tournament, and a usher came down to have me removed. The usher said the guy who owns this box saw you on TV. Doss - was that you?

Someone with some brains in the Athletic Department should figure out an incentive plan that those seats never go unused. Sure - I know that is asking too much.

Absolutely. It boggled my mind that there were so many empty seats in the first few rows of the OSU game. If you're not gonna show up find someone who will.

Excellent stuff. I've always endorsed the view that people should go to the games to watch the Bearcats, not the other team.

RE: Ken Broo and Ken Singleton
Spot on Rag and I'm in 100 percent agreement on the empty seats. We want to be big boy P5 and the best seats in the houses are not filled. Very bad optics. Very poor impression. I swear I can't figure it out. Cincinnati is a so-called sports town - yeah, I know - professional franchises and high school football primarily. But damn, do the locals not understand what they have right in front of them? This goes back a few threads when I called out the AD marketing folks. They absolutely suck IMO. Bare minimum effort. I need to get off the keyboard pontificating and let Bohn know how I feel as a former student and graduate. What the hell was the point of investing in $80+ million Nippert renovations if we can't even get fans and supporters to sit in the best 'effin seats in the joint? I mean, I get the renovations were necessary for improving functionality, keeping up with the Jones's, and showing a dedication to invest in facilities as part of the blinking P5 invite beacon. But tell me it doesn't come across borderline embarrassing to see those empty club seats? What are they dark green in color? SMDH. Put seats in butts ANYWAY YOU CAN! Hello, McFly! Hello, McBohn and the Marketing Experts! Frickin' crash test dummies dressed as sports fans would be better than empty green back seats.

We need to get our buyers to get others to use tickets when they don't. UC should facilitate the process. There is a organization that takes tickets and gives to poo folks. But do we want those people in he stadium?
