Is the ACC the only conference that does it that way? The Pac-12 uses conference record for that.

PAC’s is worse.

I thought Cheez It Bowl was for MWC. SERVPRO was a Big 12. I wonder if the 2 bowls decided to trade teams to play in them?

Frisco Bowl had no tie in or conditional for a MWC team.

Idaho Potato Bowl was for MWC.

BYU was rumored to play against an AAC school in Frisco Bowl.

UNR still showing not playing in a bowl yet.

The MWC is a backup for the Cheez-It Bowl if the Pac 12 or Big 12 can't fill their spots.

The Big 12 came a team short. They could not fulfilled their slots because Oklahoma went to the playoffs. So the Cheez It Bowl was supposed to go to the MWC.
The Big 12 did not fill their Armed Forces Bowl slot.

But the GT community is really gushing bile over Detroit, eh? Not even trying to hide it, LOL.

I do not know why people don't like Detroit. They revitalized their downtown and have great hotel casinos close to the stadium. I am not much of a night owl these days, but the nightlife there would be perfectly fine for me.

Thank you. I’ve loved my bowl and MAC CCG trips there the last 12 months. Completely different downtown than what it used to be. I implore others to give it a chance instead of taking public perception for granted.

I think it's probably the weather thing. And yeah, some misconceptions about Detroit as a bombed-out Fallujah or something.

The areas like that (think America Jewelry & Loan from Hardcore Pawn) aren’t the areas you’d be staying if you wanted to walk from hotel to one of the 3 arenas. I had a mile walk in pitch black to Ford Field and back from MGM and felt completely safe. Some cool things that grabbed my attention too.

From the top:
- The bowl is held on Boxing Day ... this means you'd need to travel on Christmas or be there over Christmas.
- It's in Detroit.
- For your ticket to count towards "GT ticket sales" you must purchase through the GTAA at the bowl rate of $100. Meanwhile the bowl itself is giving away tickets for free ( https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports...108643002/ ), and the secondary market is all the way down to $10 already.
- The Belk Bowl passed on having Auburn vs GT or South Carolina vs GT to instead field Cavman against South Carolina..... for reasons nobody outside of Charlottesville understands.
- Had GT declined the bid they would have instead been sent to better destinations like Birmingham or Dallas.
- The fan base actually wanted to travel to give a proper ending to the CPJ era ... this bowl game is the least travel-able game in the ACC's inventory
- This makes obvious a little gotcha in the ACC's one-wine rule (you can only bypass the team with the highest number of wins when selecting as a bowl if the team you select is within one win of that team's record) ... it is applied to overall record, not conference record. So Duke (3-5 ACC) got selected over GT (5-3 ACC). This also means if you schedule a bunch of nobodies in the OOC you'll be rewarded come bowl time. Going back to Cavman and the Belk ... UVA played @Indiana, Ohio, Richmond, and William & Mary OOC. GT played Alcorn State, @UGA, @USF, and BGSU. Give GT the UVA OOC schedule and they finish 9-3 instead of 7-5. So remember kids ... schedule all the paycheck games you can afford ... it pays off come bowl season. When you add Notre Dame to the bowl mix and consider GT will be playing UGA every year .... GT needs to finish THREE WINS better than somebody in conference play to be guaranteed to be selected prior come bowl time.

Tiny quibble: Virginia played Liberty, not W&M, this season. A better team (at least an FBS one) but your point remains.

You're more than welcome to decline and give your bid to Miami.

Per CBS:
Detroit has the highest violent crime rate in the nation, with 2,047 incidents per 100,000 residents. In 2016, 303 people were murdered in Detroit.

That's a higher casualty rate than the US had in Iraq at the height of the troop surge.

Yes, but I bet this is like Chicago being called "Chi-Raq" for all the murders as well. I visited Chicago in August for a conference and it was glorious, thought it was a wonderful city. That's because I stayed downtown amongst all the huge skyscrapers and parks and museums and all that. Felt entirely safe the entire time I was there, four days.

Of course, i didn't venture in to the areas, the west side and far south side, where 95% of that violence is taking place. The violence in Chicago isn't randomly distributed, certain areas are 'war zones', other areas are essentially violence free.

I bet Detroit is similar: The violence is probably confined to certain areas/neighborhoods that a tourist has no interest in going in to, so as long as you stay out of those areas you can probably safely enjoy yourself.

All that said, look, I agree that getting sent to Detroit for a bowl game sucks. It just doesn't resonate as a bowl destination. I feel for GT, you guys should have gotten a bowl bid in the south.
