https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/2016/team/22/p2

That’s the wrong year, it says 12 games played. ODU played 13 games in the 2016 season.

Those are regular season stats. The 13th game was vs EMU at the Bahamas Bowl.

04-cheers

Plus if you read the article about the firings on pilotonline it states that they were 49th in the country in total defense.

07-coffee3

I cannot make heads nor tails of the numbers without a raw source.

So far I looked at total numbers
Just with total yards against, I haven't even compared yards/per yet.
CFB/CUSA says total yards against was 4987.
NCAA says total yards against were 5247
I went to ESPN and looked at each game's box score and added the yards up and it totaled 5035.

In any event, I agree that our D in 2016 was statistically the best by whatever metric is used, since we have been in FBS, maybe since ever; and it was essentially a 'one off'.
My point was that It was also against the easiest schedule, 9 of 12 regular season teams with losing records. and then I asked if that was a coincidence?
My own opinion is that it was not. Your opinion may vary

You don't have to look far to find the problem.

You can find an unrated player like TH every once in a while, but you can't build your program with "under the radar" kids that get little to no attention.

Also, because Dr. Selig likes to hype up ODU's athletic facilities, the score for in-state IPF's is Virginia FBS rivals 3, ODU 0.

It's my guess that every commit was warned about these dismissals ahead of time to insure they know that ODU is committed to them.

I only saw Colby Godwin on odu blitz. FWIW, when you have coaches 105 players over the course of 10 season, there are gonna be some that love and some that hate the coaches.

Im good friends with one of the ex players that was kicked off by wilder. He, surprisingly, says good things about him as do the group he mainains contact with (that were at the stadium last week)

Wilder is not well liked by his players.

As I said, some do, some don't.

Yup, this is the root of all problems. The coaches cant recruit players good enough to mask their coaching mistakes.

The funny thing (and what makes these rankings meaningless) is that 247 doesn't even watch a lot of the <4 star players. I wouldn't get too hyped (this class) or too disappointed until we see how it shakes out.

Here were our 12 3 star kids from that class:

Stars:
Lawry
Ximines

Decent Starters:
Appough

Marginal Starters:
Noye
Bentley

Backups:

Nothing (not always the fault of the player):
Yorke
Boothe
Martinez
Lowe
Byrum
Little
Reynolds

The higher ranked 2 stars:
Worthy
Tyson
Swann
Howard
Davila

The lower ranked 2 stars (below 78)

Harper
Toal
Duhart
Londree
Clarke
Garcia
Branch
Fulgham
Bernhard

FWIW, here are the 3 stars since 2014:

Brickhouse
Fox
Bernard
Arnold
Ellison
Perkins
White
Wilson
Colbert
Mayo
Davis
mcDuffie
Gardner III

OK. I am going to throw this out there without having anything to compare it to. I don't know what percentage of starters are walkons on other CUSA teams, however 40% seems awfully high.

Our 2016 bowl team was arguably our best FBS product, schedule notwithstanding.

The starters on that team were FCS holdovers and 40% walkons.
Eight Monarch starters, five on defense, three on offense.
Chad Hendricks, Tyler Compton , Travis Fulgham, T.J. Ricks, Anthony Wilson, Sean Carter, Brandon Addison, and Bunmi Rotimi.
FCS players included the starting QB David Washington, and arguably our best ever WR, Zach Pascal.
Save for Ray Lawry, and Nick Clarke, and Oshane Ximines, our best players were walkons and FCS recruits.
Even now, our starting QB, LaRussa, and star WR Travis Fulghum are walkons.

This tells me that we do a good job of developing some players. It also tells me, along with our recruiting class ranks, that since 2014 we have done a piss poor job of recognizing HS talent, and/or closing the deal on solid recruits.

Our 2019 class so far looks really good. I am optimistic that John Allen can improve recruiting even more.

BW is pointing the finger at everyone BUT himself.

If all these coaches are as horrible as he is trying to say they are, that’s on him for hiring them.

I think most would agree that the strength coaches haven’t been getting it done, yet it took BW 10 years to see that.

ODU has been pushed around in the trenches the past couple of seasons. He's making the decisions based on statistics. When you rank as the worst defense, there's not much of a leg to stand on. Same for when you cannot stop the run or run the ball.

I don't believe he has strong ties, but his college playing career was at JMU.

Allen was the Coordinator of Player Personnel & Development at Penn State University from 2008 to 2010.

I am not sure that I would describe the 2016 defense as "solid".
Total defense was 96th in the Nation and more importantly 4th worst in CUSA , against arguably the easiest schedule (relatively) we faced since 2009.
Our blowouts were a result of David Washington and an anomalous schedule.
We beat EMU by 4, and they were arguably the weakest FBS team to receive a bowl bid.

They were ranked in the 60s based on footballoutsiders. That is good. Total defense is a meaningless stat that doesnt account for garbage time stats.

My stats were from NCAA.com. respected and certainly not a voodoo site.

You don't find it odd that the only season we seemed to have any semblance of a defense was the season we played 9 teams with losing records, but were blown out by the three teams with winning records?
Even if somehow we really did have a solid defense that one season, (I disagree with that, as proven by our losses) then don't you find it odd that we had a respectable defense for only that one season in ten?

Additionally, we have the rushing issue.
Assuming we didn't particularly want to rush during the Heinicke era, doesn't it strike you as odd that the only season post TH that we showed an ability to rush consistently was that same season?

I personally don't believe in the above coincidences. I believe we need changes on both sides of the ball.

04-cheers

No one called them voodoo, they are just pointless because they dont accountfor garbage time stats or level of competition.

I dont find it odd at all. Every year is different. That year, the defense was good. Almost every other year (a couple were decent) was not good. This past year was extremely bad and possibly the worse its ever been since moving to FBS.

Rushing offense has rarely been an issue. It wasnt in FCS and since moving up, It was ranked 55 in 2014, and top 50 in 15 and 16. The last 2 years have not been good, but I would venture to guess Davis and Knoght change that next year.

Rarely and issue?
Rushing offense, or lack thereof, was a big part of the lack of success of Shuler Bentley, as well as Steve Williams.

Nope. I think the real lack of success on Bently's part was throwing to the WRs feet on a huge % of his incompletions. Williams is the exact opposite. He is overthrowing nearly all the time.

In all truthfulness, he is not getting it done, at least not to the expectations he has set for the team. We as fans, and the school spend too much money to keep investing in 4 and 5 win seasons.

IMO, people need to question BW’s hiring of coaches. Some of these coaches were here for two years.

I think I like this. Who better to coach the line than the one calling the plays. He should know better than anyone what is expected of the line.
