Maine was all he knew beside two years at Boston College as a graduate assistant. At this point in his career his coaching network is smaller than most FBS coaches because Maine was all he knew and we see it with our coaching staff coming from the Maine coaching tree.
I dont have the info off hand.....who is remaining from Maine besides Scott/Whitcomb? Having said that, assistants typically have some type of connection to the coaches or school.
Yea, I think Scott and Whitcomb are the only remaining Maine guys as of right now. Both Nagy and Comissiong spent time at Maine.
What I was getting at is kind what you stated: "assistant typically have some type of connection". When Wilder was an assistant he spent so much of his career at Maine he didn't create connections/ network relationships outside of Maine. For example, if he had spent time over his 20 years as an assistant coach at say 5 different programs he would have a huge network of coaching relationships to fall back on right now in the hiring process. Up until now, he relied on the Maine connections for hiring coaches.
I dont think your point is a bad one at all. They do run across a bunch of coaches at camps, conferences, and such. Dont think there is a lack of exposure to other coaches but there is a lack working side by side. There are also search firms that are employed for this, though Im not sure If ODU is employing one.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
BW needs to make this a good hire this is probably his hail mary play for his coaching career at the FBS level. When it comes to position coaches a lower level coach that has intrigued me for years is retired coach Rod Broadway and his understudies head coach Sam Washington and defensive coordinator Courtney Coard at NCA&T. They're position coaches at FBS level but wonder what either Washington or Coard could do with CUSA talent. They have together upset UNCC, ECU and Kent St over the last couple of years.

Certainly has to get this hire right to stay at ODU long term. Hes young enough to possblly get another job. But the importance of this hire is not
Pverstated. I mentioned the guy st A@T, he would seem like a good hire.

The DL has always been a strength. Injuries to Fox and Ward were not adequately overcome.
LOL you cannot demote a State employee "on the sly". Even if you do not provide a public press release, the State of Virginia Department of Human Resource Management has specific guidelines for demotions; minimum 5% salary decrease, a re-definition of duties, etc. By law, this is a matter of public record.
If this happened at all, it was a verbal reallocation of duties.
As for the DL, I guess the term adequately is subjective. The drop-off without Fox was more substantial than I would have expected, if it ever was that good. Last year's schedule precluded a valid assessment.
Ive told you thry demoted him. It is a fact. Whether you want to believe it or not is your descretion.
I was interpreting the term "demotion" in the legal sense.
What was done was that his duties as DC were suspended and given to another coach. Nagy was not demoted in the legal sense in that his contract was not rewritten and his compensation was not reduced.
He was then terminated within the proscriptions of his contract as Defensive Coordinator.

The new WR coach made a huge difference this year, especially with Fulgam. We need a similar splash with new DC.

Mike Sanford was Notre Dame’s OC, so I’m not sure if WKU fans will be impressed with the new coaches previous title. Just a hunch.

Helton doesn't have a very impressive resume, but comes from a family coaching tree type deal. Wait and see, but its not a hire I would have been thrilled over.

What would be the pros and cons of getting Lambert? He was pretty solid for Wake Forest when they made a run in the 2000s

Brad Lambert
How has Brad Lambert's defenses performed at Wake Forrest and Charlotte? Brad is an interesting candidate who could bring recruits with him and provide insight into uncommitted recruits.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
MY .02: Scott is doing both OC and OL so they can take some of the OL money and add it to what BW would pay a DC. Yes, they're hiring a TE coach, but he could make pennies on the dollar as an entry-level position. I THINK that the added $$$ might bring someone like Lambert into play.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
I don't know a ton about Lambert, but I think I would be ok with him. He's got some head coaching experience and that could always help around the office. His defenses were never all that good, but he started from scratch and was certainly without a ton of talent. I don't remember us beating them due to breakdowns in coverage or missed tackles.
My only complaint about him was how conservative he was in playcalling/game situations, but that would not be his role here so that shouldn't be a concern.
