Defensive Coordinator Options:
Since Nagy was demoted, we are looking for a new DC.

Buggs- Assistant DC/safeties
Comissiong- Assistant HC/DL
Perryman- Cornerbacks
Nagy- Demoted to Linebackers coach.

I would assume the replacement is not on staff. The only group that showed great promise was DL. And Commission is more of a rah rah guy than anything, which is good for DL spot. Would want him to stay on.

Outside options:

Brad Lambert - fired as HC of Charlotte. Didnt have a ton of talent and mediocre defesnes as well but I would interview.

Anthony Campinile DBs coach at BC -might be my top choice but probably higher aspirations.

Bob Trout- DC of JMU. Longtime vet of FCS from the Parcells coaching tree. May want to make jump up.

Byron Thweat - LB of Marshall. Familiar with area; former Jmu and Virginia State coach.

Zohn Burden -WR of VT. Outside of the box since most of career has been offensive side but did spend three years as DBs coach here. Would likely help recruiting.

Courtney Coard- DL/ assistant DC NC A&T. They always ahave a good defense, particularly tush defense. Young guy that brings a lot of energy.

Any other names to throw out?

Was Nagy actually demoted? I cannot find corroboration on that, and an inquiry with the University was met with "Rich Nagy is currently the Defensive Coordinator for ODU Football."
Official demotions are usually met with some fanfare and a press release (see Bill Dee). If it was "unofficial", then it amounts to nothing more than lip service. (I may have missed something)
In any event we will certainly be replacing the defensive coordinator.

I would like someone with FBS experience, and maybe some P5 experience as well.
Brad Lambert more than fits that bill nicely. Additionally, this might allow us to acquire UNCC's Shane Montgomery as OC. I have long been a fan of his offense, if not his players.
Given what they had to work with, both did an exemplary job IMHO.
The only question is would one or both be able to assess and recruit at a higher level.

I am not in agreement with your assessment of Commisong, however. Other than WR, the Dline was the one position at which we had true solid FBS players, and IMO it under-performed substantially.

He was demoted. Whether or not they wanted to release that info, he was. Buggs took over and Nagy stayed on as Lb coach. Wilder did not want to publicly embarrass Nagy.

The DL has always been a strength. Injuries to Fox and Ward were not adequately overcome.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
I’m open to any of those options. My bar is set pretty low. As long as it’s not a long time friend of Bobby or Wood and the individual has proven success (at least FCS level). We aren’t getting a high quality FBS DC. We don’t pay enough and it’s a low profile job right now.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
You know what hurts Wilder in my opinion is he was too loyal to Maine and wasn't a well traveled season coach that progressed through the ranks at different programs. Maine was all he knew beside two years at Boston College as a graduate assistant. At this point in his career his coaching network is smaller than most FBS coaches because Maine was all he knew and we see it with our coaching staff coming from the Maine coaching tree.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
I have to be frank, I saw nothing about this defense that was deserving of remaining on staff. Poor tackling, DBs constantly out of position and looking like they were afraid to tackle, D-Line that was blown out frequently, pursuit to the outside that was slow and ineffective. Offense -- a most pedestrian approach that I have seen of any team this season -- RPO with no QB intention to run, made for easy pickings, no outside speed to turn a corner, bubble passes that were broadcast from the snap and totally ineffective. Actually, a disappointing season and unless some major changes are on hand for next year, I don't see anything bright on the horizon. Coaching was deficient from the head down -- we were continually outcoached with imaginative schemes that left us in the dust with our pedestrian offensive schemes and defensive play that continually resulted in 'big burn' plays by inferior offenses and players. The Rice game summed up the entire sorry ass season. If this keeps up, ODU should get use to playing in front of the crowd they saw at Rice -- they don't deserve the fans that they have let down this year -- yeah, new stadium my butt -- like that is going to compensate for a good competitive performance on the field.

I don't expect the team to win every game, but c'mon, at this point getting beat by the likes of Rice is beyond pathetic. If Wilder comes out at tomorrow's press conference with his standard "Just a couple of plays away, just wait until we correct the big play mistakes, we are going to work really hard, etc,. etc., etc., blah, blah, blah", I think I'll puke. I would feel better if he just came out and said, "We suck, we played nowhere near our potential, and I have no excuses that can be offered'. Unlikely, but the apparent truth.

LOL you cannot demote a State employee "on the sly". Even if you do not provide a public press release, the State of Virginia Department of Human Resource Management has specific guidelines for demotions; minimum 5% salary decrease, a re-definition of duties, etc. By law, this is a matter of public record.
If this happened at all, it was a verbal reallocation of duties.

As for the DL, I guess the term adequately is subjective. The drop-off without Fox was more substantial than I would have expected, if it ever was that good. Last year's schedule precluded a valid assessment.

I was going to suggest CNU's head coach before I saw he was the LB coach at New Hampshire for the 64-61 game.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
ODU finds itself in quite a predicament. Bobby was able to convince Broderick that he needed job security for his coaching staff, bad as they are. On the one hand most of them need to be let go and on the other hand I don’t have much confidence in his ability to “pick” new assistants. Wood will not give him the reins for much of a change because when Bobby leaves after next year we won’t be able to turn right around and pay his newest coaching staff to leave on top of paying the current group to leave. Leadership succession is not something that has been well planned by ODU leadership.

We’re going to have to suffer through a 3 win season next year, then start the rebuild. Wilder will get next year, whether he deserves it, or earned it. Let the next coach rebuild the coaching staff

I dont have the info off hand.....who is remaining from Maine besides Scott/Whitcomb? Having said that, assistants typically have some type of connection to the coaches or school.

FWIW I was told the exact same thing Giles was. I believe another poster also confirmed at the time. All fairly moot now.

Yea, I think Scott and Whitcomb are the only remaining Maine guys as of right now. Both Nagy and Comissiong spent time at Maine.

What I was getting at is kind what you stated: "assistant typically have some type of connection". When Wilder was an assistant he spent so much of his career at Maine he didn't create connections/ network relationships outside of Maine. For example, if he had spent time over his 20 years as an assistant coach at say 5 different programs he would have a huge network of coaching relationships to fall back on right now in the hiring process. Up until now, he relied on the Maine connections for hiring coaches.

RE: Defensive Coordinator Options:
I actually think Brad Lambert would be a solid hire. He knows the Conference, the recruiting areas to tackle, and has plenty of defensive coaching experience at the power 5 level and coached on staffs that went to some pretty good bowl games and Wake Forest’s ACC Championship game appearance in 2006. He’s probably seen as “damaged goods” in the coaching circuit due to Charlotte’s dismal years of existence, so we could probably bring him in at a reasonable rate. I don’t know, I’d recommend at least an in person interview.
