RE: Official Game Thread: Georgia Southern
Good game against a tough team, nice to see Boyd and Good still finding the range from 3.
that last 3 by Good was a dagger, ice cold shot to take and make in that situation.

Free throws sucked tonight.

Curious, what makes that one missed layup more important >the other 7-8?

Sparked a mini run for them. They got the rebound and raced down court for a layup. A true 4 point swing.

There have been a few of those, a couple of more since you posted this.
We just got to Finish better.

That’s the truth. I don’t think we’ve made contested layups well for a couple of years. No reason to fret tonight though, big time win! Is Patrick Good clutch or what?!

RE: Official Game Thread: Georgia Southern (W 69-64)
43 total boards - more than a rebound a minute. Wonder what the ETSU record is for boards in a game?

As Rod says, good game against a good team. They were a bit undisciplined, but I think they tend to always be that way. We let them have too many wide-open shots, especially from the corner.

And yes, it was pretty obvious if Good hit that 3 that it should be over.

And more yes......we'v got to hit FTs. That could have cost us. And imo, still too many offensive fouls.

[edit: apparently they upped the rebound total to 46. I couldn't find the single-game record, but know it's way more than that.]

Good defense on the road against one of the highest scoring and highest shooting percentage teams in the country.

Held a 97 point scoring team to 64, only 33 below their average.
Held the best shooting percentage team in D1 (.578) to .417

and did NOT foul doing it: only 10 free throws for them.

This team is becoming a tough, gritty defensive bunch!

Fantastic, scrappy win for ETSU tonight. We thrived by defense last year, and it looks like that's only improved this year. Some crazy numbers tonight, and the players are learning to make buckets when it's most critical. Also, Mladen's and Jeromy's passing between themselves is beautiful to watch, not something you often see between two bigs.

I know the kid's a freshman, but Williamson seems lost on the floor at this level. Against D1 teams, He's played for a total of 81 minutes with 22 points to show for it, and shooting 7-22. This from a player averaging 23 points a game last year. He's constantly being mismatched defensively, and he does fight hard on defense, but there's nothing he can really do about it. Perhaps he's just getting minutes that Bo will eat up on his return, and I hope to see big things from him in the next few years. He just needs extra time with the practice squad

Yes, but that was probably partly by design. This was, after all, the highest shooting percentage team in the country, but just plain bad from 3, averaging 4.6 makes on .280 from 3. They want to take everything to the rim.

The Bucs focused on building a wall around the rim to stop penetration, and let the perimeter shot go to a certain extent. Against this team it worked.

ETSU showed last game that they could focus on fighting through screens and defending the perimeter. They'll REALLY have to get that done against Wofford.

You do understand that Williamson is a true freshman. The 23 points per game last year was against high school players.

Congratulations to the coaches and players. Tough gritty win on the road. Bucs played tough down the stretch and did not fold. Great team win!

Yes, and Bo and Mladen were true freshmen last year. I realize the difference, but it doesn't change the fact that he doesn't look prepared yet for D1 play and getting the minutes he has

Indeed it was! Quite the game of runs.. one minute were up 8, another minute were down 2, etc. Love the grit this team is building. Boyd and Good are really starting to get ice in their veins when it matters. Rodriguez just grabs boards at will and gets us so many extra possessions. Tisdale has been huge for us this year as well.

Glad that we have a few days to prepare for Wofford.. I'll be there and hope many others are too!

I know what you're saying, but he's not in there for scoring. That's what Good, Tisdale, Boyd, etc., are for. He's a ball handler first and foremost on this team - for now. I don't think he looks "lost" at all. Overmatched by the big guards sometimes? Yes, but that's no surprise and sort of a good-with-the-bad kind of scenario. His quickness can give him an advantage over (some of) them on the other side of the equation. I think Forbes knows his strengths (and weaknesses).

Just out of curiosity, how would you compare Williamson to Jason Williams as a freshman?

Coach Forbes in the post game interview on the radio said that the coaching staff made the decision not to make guarding the 3 a priority as the stats showed that GSU was not a great long range shooting team. He referenced that decision to a game that he coached against Memphis when Memphis was ranked #1. The feeling was that (barring an unexpected hot streak outside the arc) if a bad 3 point shooting team hits some early shots it will only encourage them to shoot more, which statistically they should miss, and get away from their normal game plan.
In the pregame interview it sounded as if Hodges is nearing his return.
Whatever else someone might say about this year's team, especially in regards to last night's below normal average shooting and free throw percentages and inability to hold onto the ball even when not defended closely, this team has guts.

I was gonna make the same comment, but for some reason late last night I couldn't get signed on.
Which is a reasonable strategy...................until the trend doesn't hold. We well remember the countless times (under the previous regime) when oodles of players from multitudes of our opponents had career nights against us - often due to a 3-pt. barrage(s). One year it happened in about 1/3 to 1/2 of our games (I think the latter). In no way am I criticizing Forbes - only saying that statistics work out only to the extent that they work out.

That’s a lengthy way of saying it won’t work out if it doesn’t work out, but yes in fact it worked out. :D
