If we had made no coaching change, it would've been completely realistic to expect a finish better than 5th and to challenge for the tournament title.

This team looks more like it will have a 15 or 16 win season, 8th place finish, and a first round exit.

I didn't expect them to win the national championship, but I didn't expect them to regress either.

Last years team lost to sub 250 teams three times. And to a UAB team ranked like 190. And had four games go to the wire with 250ish teams (Mercer, Samford, Sienna, and South Florida in the first round of the AAC tournament).

The 21 wins were mostly a mirage and the 5th place finish based in large part on the conference being weaker than expected because of injuries to key players on other teams.

Last years team was historically bad, almost certainly worse than the last two Pastner teams and the first year of Tubby that had wins in the teens. Right now, we've got three losses, one against an almost certain tournament team, one against a top 50ish P5 middleweight, and one against a pretty decent top 100ish mid major squad that returns everyone from an autobid tournament team. We'll probably lose to Texas Tech and Tennessee coming up.

Will we be better this year? Worse? About the same? I don't know. But I don't think you can say right now that we've regressed. Hopefully we're at least 5-5 after the Tennessee game, and we'll see where we go from there.

DRose was the best player on the floor on either team from game one. Cal convinced him to defer to some of his more stat driven teammates (CDR). He did a great job deferring and being an accepted member of that veteran team from day one. He took over when he had to especially in the NCAA tourney. The only thing he ever struggled with was his shot as does every NBA superstar and some turnovers that could have done either way.

Link?

I distinctly remember Cal saying DRose needed to be more selfish and quit deferring... but hey, I didnt help Naismith invent basketball like you did.

Always with the smart ass answer. You are a prick.

That actually is praise when your coach is asking you to shoot more and take over. DRose handled it well. He could have shot 20 times a game like Wagner. How do you think that would have went over with the returning players from an E8 team?

We have no shot at all. Right now, we're 10th in the conference in RPI. Texas Tech, UT, UCF, and Temple are the only teams left on our schedule in the top 90. Our SOS is garbage. The only way we go dancing is to run the table at tourney time and we're so far behind the pack it would take several consecutive miracles.

I don't hate Penny. Never have. I always loved him as a player.

But it was stupid to hire him as the head coach. No experience. We wasted a lot of the school's money to hire someone based on popularity not qualifications.

That's what I hate.

The auto qualifier is the conference tournament winner. I said “We have a shot in our building.” and that’s a fact. I guess you didn’t think the Utep game was possible either.

If you're referring to the 2011 CUSA tournament championship, I always thought it was possible. UTEP was overrated. And that has nothing to do with Penny being unqualified to coach at Memphis. Nice diversion down memory lane, though.

You do realize right now, we are $12M ahead of last year in REVENUE BECAUSE OF HIRING PENNY. No one else could have done that (who would take the job).

We also had a top 30 recruiting class. Will have somewhere between 3-15 recruiting class next year.

If that don’t convince you, you are just plain IGNORANT.

Enthusiasm wanes when losses mount. Ask Pastner.

His current class is rather pedestrian. One guy who jacks up threes. One who is clearly not ready to start. And some other guys who need to get used to the bench.
