Very puzzling. No mention of cause of death in any of the articles or even in the obituary.

Looks like his son confirmed suicide on FB. For whatever reason there is a media black out of sorts on this. RIP Tom. Keep an eye on your friends and family.

I figured it was something of this nature. The media blackout, and the way the convo was very forcible shut down on BCL made it pretty obvious.

Strange on a lot of fronts, tbh. Suicide swept under the carpet, almost as a disgraceful thing doesn't help.

Regardless of how someone passes, it's sad, and unfortunate.

RIP

Mental illness is an illness like any other. It can kill you. Get help if you need it.

RIP.

Suicide Contagion. I'm pretty sure there's been an unwritten rule in mass media to tread carefully when covering suicide going back decades.

Oh yeah, absolutely a thing. We only hear about suicides when it's a celeb. I feel like i was listening to a Freakonomics podcast about this a year or 2 ago.

That said, it's total BS. We talk up gun violence all the time, yet even with all the gun violence deaths it only makes up 50% of self inflicted gun-related deaths. I'm not taking a stand on guns here, i'm just saying that NOT talking about suicide - be it gun-related, or not - has done nothing to tamp down it happening.

All we're doing is perpetuating the faux shame associated with feelings of wanting to kill yourself. Mental illness is real and it sucks we sweep it under the rug.

The studies do support that suicides rates in regions do correlate with the frequency of non-fiction stories of suicide in the media. Of course whether the strength of that correlation is worth the negative impacts of the self-censorship of the media you mentioned is debatable. I suspect that spinning the story in specific ways could minimize the impact and possibly even change the direction of the impact.
FWIW Gun violence, mass shootings at least, also has a media drivencluster effect similar to that of suicides.

Heard a statistic on the radio the other day that for the 3rd straight year life expectancy has gone down in the US; the top 2 reasons are Overdoses and Suicide.

Yep...we've dropped almost a year off the average expectancy in the past half decade specifically due to those two things.

RE: Tom Groeschen has passed away
So life expectancy is still good, as long as you don't voluntarily shorten it.

It is amazing how far life expectancy increases once you make it to 30 years old.
