RE: Official Game Thread: North Dakota State
The Bison are #193 in Kenpom. They are 2-3 with wins over #181 Santa Barbara at home and #293 Towson at a neutral site; losses @ #102 New Mexico St. and neutral site to #172 Miami (Ohio) and #337 Incarnate Word. They are a solid, mid level mid major. As such a cut above Chicago State and Sam Houston.

They depend on the 3 for 43% of their points, average 10.8 makes per game on .378 shooting from the arc. Everybody will put up the 3, and 8 of their players hit .333 or better, including their 6-10 guy Rocky Kreuser with 1.8 makes on .500 shooting.

They defend the perimeter well, holding opponents to 6 three’s per game on .323 shooting.

Rebounding is weak, with a -6.4 margin. Turnover margin is good with +2.2

Depth is good with 8 guys averaging 17.6 minutes or better and another adding 14.4 minutes.

Their stats are here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/g...mbined.pdf

Three NCAA tournament appearances since 2009 including a win over 5 seed Oklahoma in 2014. That goes along with 6 FCS national championships since 2011 and the #1 seed in the playoffs this year. They are doing something right in Fargo.

They have a $28 million athletic budget, more than 2.5 times that of 3 of the 7 schools reporting budget information from their conference.

USA Today database of athletic budgets

In most cases, just follow the money. Conference winners usually are leading their conferences in athletics spending.

RE: Official Game Thread: North Dakota State
Coach Forbes on the radio this am. Was pleased with 2nd half defense vs. Sam Houston State. Explained how the Cayman Island Classic was set up. 4 teams; ETSU, Sam Houston; Jackson State, and Chicago State played 2 money game vs. the 8 teams in the field going to the Cayman Islands. He said ETSU got paid less than the other 3 teams so they could host the 2 home games. Believe they got paid 75K? He feels the team is improving. Talked about the improved 3 pt shooting and praised Boyd & Good. Talked about the near 3:1 Assist/TO ratio of Tisdale, Good, and Williamson. When asked about the status of Bo Hodges, he said he did not practice yesterday and didn't expect him to practice today. He said his current injury is not related to the surgery he had. Thought he was close to coming back but was not going to push it. Talked about NDSU. Thought they had a solid team with wins over Santa Barbara and Towson State. Good shooting and passing team. Hoped everyone would come out to the game tomorrow at 4pm and then watch the football team get a win over Jacksonville State.

I'm pretty sure Griesel is out with an injury.

The absences of Curtis and Corley are interesting.

A good win all around with a bit of suspense in the middle. Contributions from so many quarters. Bernard and Harrison adding important minutes. A good learning lesson on guarding against the 3; you can't rest for a minute against a team that works to get open and can shoot it. Some of the most fun came from watching the increasing coordination between Rodriguez and Armus inside on offense. That type of give and take, recognizing that the defense has committed to you and sensing/seeing that the other is in position to score is one of the great joys of watching basketball.

RE: Official Game Thread: North Dakota State
NDSU didn't strike me as that good a team, but every time I thought the Bucs were going to pull away to a comfortable win they battled back (usually started with a bad decision) and kept it somewhat interesting, they got tired/time ran out time before they could make another push at the end. I wasn't worried about a loss, I think the final score probably ended up in the correct range of the two teams skill.

RE: Official Game Thread: North Dakota State (W 79-61)
The Bison had to tangle with the #1 Zags last night, and after leading by 1 halfway thru the first half, did the el foldo and lost by 42. Zags shot an incredible 64% (including 54% from deep), while the Bison hit 35% (15% from deep). A grand total of *2* assists by the Bison -- vs. a more-than-healthy 25 for the Zags.

Ouch.
