Back on topic. I remember when Duke beat UK, most people thought Duke was just going to roll thru this season and cut down the nets. Gonzaga is a pretty darn good team as well.

I knew it.
I watched the end of that game and I said to myself that there will be "If Gonzaga can do it why can't we!" thread on here.
I'm a little surprised that there wasn't a "Look! Xavier gets invited to Maui and WE DON'T" thread as well.
...Now comes the "settling for mediocrity" critics.

And your point is... WHAT...exactly?
If you're asking whether I'd rather see UC playing in a top-flite invitational tournament like the "Maui Shootout" or playing in some high-school type gym in the Caymans or wherever, I'll tell you "Maui" every darn time.
Xavier gets it. They really do. I don't feel at all embarrassed as a UC fan saying it. I wish UC "got it" as much as Xavier does. Xavier is the better basketball program, playing in the better basketball conference, right now. The point isn't really even debatable. Ditto with Gonzaga. They are a better basketball program, though we could argue about whether the Big West or the American is a better situation, I guess.
You can pen me in with the "settling for mediocrity" fans, I guess. Whatever floats your boat.

I thought UC had already recently been to Maui(2009), and actually made it to the finals against Gonzaga as opposed to xu playing their final game to see who finishes 7th.

RE: Watching Gonzaga
UC has finished ahead of x 4 of the last 6 seasons in Kenpom and has never been out of the top 50 while X has been outside twice. Even in their programs greatest season we were clearly better in all objective metrics yet that was seen as so special their coach parlayed that into getting a better job. Seems an odd time to declare them the superior program.
The Maui thing has been discussed ad nauseum around here. I would love to see them make their case again. That was just as our program was coming out of the dark ages and our football team was competing for a national title. If anyone thinks more people in this city cares about X they're delusional.

UC now has first class facilities. We will not be moving to an offsite facility for our games.
It will now be time to evaluate Mick. I am generally very supportive with the ongoing caveat of the blown lead against Nevada. That was the most damning indictment of Mick I can think of. I am willing to give him a Mulligan on that.
It is time to put up or shut up.

Gonzaga is in the West Coast Conference, not the Big West, but --- whatever.

My POINT exactly is that you bitchers and moaners are getting quite predictable. And... It's getting a bit old.
Here's an idea! Lets just sit back and see where the season goes! Maybe they'll... oh, I don't know... IMPROVE as the season goes on. Maybe?
Otherwise, go forth and "get it" by buying a Zavier t-shirt and root happily ever after for the superior program... in your opinion.

It is soooooo comical when people insinuate kenpom rankings are viewed as more prestigious than Sweet 16's and Elite eight's.

Where did I do that? Would I rather have had a longer run last year instead of a top 5 ranking? Of course. But as far as measuring who has the better team year in and year out Kenpom, BPI, etc are much more relevant measurements.

It's also comical when people point to a single game as a sole indicator of the overall health of the basketball program. Kenpom is more objective than kneejerk reactions that follow Xavier, Ohio State, or tourney games, but it also doesn't factor for the "importance" of a game.
Surely there is a middle ground that could be realized, but likely not here.

I get it. Stat guys like to point to analytics when arguing their points on how good a team or coach is. And to a certain extent, you would be right. But like it or not, that's not the perception world we live in. The average fan, media, writer, pundit look at hardware as a measure of how good a team/coach/program is. Case in point, Google or Wikipedia any team or coach in the country. You will find how many conference championships, NCAA appearances, Final Fours, etc the team/coach has. You won't find one mention of how many times they were ranked in the top 50 in kenpom. Not saying its right or wrong, it's just the world we live in.
