RE: 2018-19 Women's Basketball Thread
Hawks are home today at 2 pm against W&M (4-6). Another game we need to have if we want to finish in the top 2 or 3.

We’re tied for third with Towson at 7-3, and currently have the H2H tiebreaker.

Ahead of us are JMU (9-1) and Drexel (7-2).

Shrita Parker (knee) did not start and is likely out for the game today.

She suffered an apparent knee bruise on Friday, and while she returned to that game, I imagine the staff felt it best to have her recover until next Friday.

Ashli Jeune drew the start in her spot.

Hawks up 36-27 at the half. Suggs continues her hot shooting and has 14 at the half, including four 3-pointers.

Tied up 58-58 with 5:32 left. We’re really struggling without our leading scorer in there, but are fighting hard.

Hawks win 66-58! We really gutted that one out! Bell, in particular, made some huge rebounds over players 3 inches taller down the stretch.

12-0 at home, 8-3 in CAA play!

Not pretty, but they found a way to win.

RE: 2018-19 Women's Basketball Thread
JMU beat Hofstra to advance to 10-1. It’ll be real hard to catch them, even if we win in Harrisonburg.

NU toppled Towson, so that helps! We now have 3rd place all to ourselves at the moment.

Drexel (7-2) hosts Delaware (5-4) at 5 PM. A Delaware upset moves us into 2nd place. Go Hens!

Drexel won 58-41. So here’s how it looks:

1. JMU: 10-1
2. Drexel: 8-2
3. UNCW: 8-3
4. Towson: 7-4

Next week will be a monster test for us. We'll @ Towson on Friday night, and @ JMU on Sunday.

The following Friday we face Drexel at home. Thus, our next three games are against teams in the top 4.

They really control their own destiny for a #2 at this point. Hope they run the table.

RE: 2018-19 Women's Basketball Thread
There's a chance the CAA could be a 2-bid league this year. The conference is the # 10-ranked league in the nation, with JMU (18-4) sitting at # 36 in the RPI. They lack quality wins, however; their best win out of conference was a 69-57 home victory vs. Georgetown (11-13, # 92 RPI) back on Nov 16.

While I of course want to beat them up in Harrisonburg on Sunday, the next best thing would be JMU running the table until the CAA Final, where we knock them off. That would give them a 27-5 final record.

1 bid league no matter what. Women's games are not judged the same as the men's. Mid majors are non existent in the the at large game in women's. Even with heafty records. JMU does not have the wins to get an at large. Seeding is also a joke on the women's side. You can routinely find mid majors who ran the table and had 1 or 2 losses all season long and be ranked in the top 25 end up as a double digit seed in the tournament. JMU has had better teams with better at large chances and didnt get one, there is no way this season they are even in the conversation. Just my 2 cents.

Lacey Suggs takes home CAA Player of the Week honors! Congrats Lacey!

Suggs joins Shrita Parker as the only 2 Seahawks to take home the weekly award so far this season. Shrita was named POW Jan 21. She also received an Honorable Mention POW on Nov 26.

Suggs Named CAA Player-of-the-Week

RICHMOND, Virginia – UNCW junior guard Lacey Suggs has been named Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week after leading the Seahawks to league wins over Elon and William & Mary.

Suggs, who hails from White Lake, N.C., becomes the second UNCW player to garner CAA Player-of-the-Week accolades this season. Redshirt senior guard Shrita Parker earned the award on Jan. 21 after the Seahawks' victories over Towson and James Madison.

In helping the Seahawks extend their win streak to four straight games, Suggs averaged 23.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting a blistering 61.5 percent from the field. She also knocked down 6-of-9 three-point field goal attempts and was a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line as the Seahawks remained unbeaten at Trask Coliseum with a 12-0 record.

Suggs registered a career-high 29 points in the Seahawks' 76-51 victory over the two-time defending CAA champions, hitting 11-of-16 shots from the floor and all five free throws.

In Sunday's 66-58 triumph over William & Mary, she poured in 18 points, including a career-best four three-pointers, and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes for the first time in her career.

Suggs, who has started all 22 games for Coach Karen Barefoot's squad, leads the CAA with a .511 field goal percentage while ranking third on the team with a 10.9 scoring average.

UNCW, 15-7 overall and 8-3 in the CAA, begins a brief two-game road trip on Friday, Feb. 15, when the Seahawks venture to Towson for a 7 p.m. CAA contest against the Tigers at SECU Arena.

I don't disagree. Couple that with an overall lack of interest from the overall basketball community in that there's no "outrage" on womens teams being snubbed like that. Hell, there's HARDLY any outrage when mid major men get snubbed from the tourney or poor seeding. It's no surprise that they'll do the same to the women with less impunity.

RE: 2018-19 Women's Basketball Thread
By the numbers, here have been our keys to success this year:

* Turnover Margin: # 47 in the nation - +3.18
* Steals: t-60th in the nation - 9.7 per game
* FG %: # 90 in the nation - .421 (In CAA play, we're shooting at a league-best .443 clip)

In addition, we've demonstrated drastically improved 3-point shooting. In non-conference play, we shot under .300, putting us well outside the Top 200 nationally. In league play, we're shooting a CAA-best .360. In the national rankings, that would put us at # 34 in the nation. These individuals have contributed the most to this turnaround:

Three-Point Shooting (CAA-only games)

* Lacey Suggs: .500 (14/28): t-1st in the CAA thru 11 games
* Shrita Parker: .457 (16/35): # 4
* Ahyiona Vason: .462 (6/13): NR (not enough attempts)
