Thanksgiving Week in the SoCon: Citadel 91 @ 4-1 JMU 82
The Citadel went on the road to upset a 4-0 JMU team 91-82 in overtime in Harrisonburg. Citadel was once again led by graduate transfer Lew Stallworth who scored 26 points on 10-18 shooting (0-1 from 3, 6-7 from the line) with 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 turnover. He's been one of the brightest newcomers in the SoCon thus far. JMU is not likely to be the last team that the Citadel will upset this year.

Samford led #23 Ohio State by 3 at the half in Columbus but could not hold on, losing 68-50, their first loss of the season.

At a neutral site game in Cancun, Western Carolina gave an 0-3 Jacksonville State team their first win of the season 53-84. Earlier in the year Samford beat Jacksonville State 92-72 in Birmingham.

Mercer over Maryland Eastern Shore 80-42 in Macon.

and VMI over Kentucky Christian 106-80 in Lexington.

Mercer plays the Citadel very early (12/1) in the season, and it's also on the road. That's gonna be an interesting game for sure.

December first will be an interesting day in the SoCon.

ETSU will get its first shot at one of the two consensus top ranked SoCon teams preseason in Wofford (although Furman has played best early). At a home court where even UNC is lucky to get out with a win. Citadel would love to repeat last year's habit of knocking off higher ranked SoCon teams at home against Mercer. Their 2 graduate transfer guards (Lew Stallworth and Connor Kern) are turning out to be decent replacements for the departed Frankie Johnson and Tariq Simmons. Chattanooga with Tennessee Tech and VMI with Longwood play teams similar to their ranking. Western Carolina gets to see if they can step up against Furman. And UNCG gets a shot at the big boys in Kentucky.

It should be a pretty good barometer of the early weather in the SoCon.

Mercer came within 4 of undefeated NC State on the road, 74-78, pulling close at the end and playing mostly small ball. UNCG handled a solid Louisiana Tech team 80-73.

Mercer and the Citadel's transfer point guards are really looking good.
Lew Stallworth is hitting over 62% of his shots and averaging 23 ppg in D1 games.
Djordje Dimitrijevic had 25 points tonight on 7-10 shooting and 11-11 from the FT line. Added 7 rebounds.
They are both tough to keep away from the hoop.

Mercer turned it over *23* times (to NC St.'s 11), but out-rebounded the 'Pack by 5.

How do the transfers work for Citadel since they are a military school?

I had the same question. . . (from Wikipedia) The Citadel Graduate College offers 26 master's degrees with 41 different concentrations, 25 graduate certificates and 2 educational specialist courses. . . undergraduates- 2,323 cadets and 375 non-cadets . . . postgraduates- 829. So there are postgraduate opportunities at The Citadel.

Yes, Citadel has had graduate programs for quite a while. And get this...……...they even let *girls* go there now! Oh, the horror...….

So this pretty well answers the questions I had. You can obviously take courses at the Citadel without committing to the full fledged military aspects of it. Interesting.

Yes, been like that a while. I have a female close friend who got a graduate degree there back in the '80s, I believe. She, nor it, had absolutely nothing to do with the military. My memory is that they opened it up both for better community relations, and just to leverage the staff they had. I used to know all that, but have long forgotten.
High standards (GPA, etc.) to get in. Highly regarded academically, with (supposedly) top-notch instructors. I'm pretty sure you can even go as an undergraduate and not be in one of the military tracks, but not certain on that.

That's a gross amount of turnovers. NC State didn't need defensive rebounds because of all those turnovers. NC State had 14 offensive rebounds compared to 7 for Mercer. Even with all of those mistakes, Mercer was still within 2 points at the end. An amazing effort, but this team is still finding their way. It should be a totally different vibe by seasons end. They are getting used to each other with what is essentially a brand new team.

You don't want to coast against Mercer. Both NC State and Georgia State saw leads evaporate as Mercer stayed disciplined and kept scoring down the stretch with their 'small ball' lineup of 4 guards and 6-7 205 Cory Kilby.

Against the Wolfpack they almost abandoned their bigs, with 6-11 Freshman Aimaq (6 minutes, 0 points, 1 rebound, 3 turnovers) and 6-10 Brazilian walk on Baffuto (8 minutes, 3 points, 0 rebounds) doing little for them.

JUCO point guard Djordje Dimitrejevic on the other hand got 25 points (he leads the team with 15.5) and 7 rebounds. Quite an addition for the Bears!

7-0 Furman crushed 1-5 UNC Asheville in Asheville 65-51. http://furmanpaladins.com/sports/m-baskb...EM_ID=4000

7-1 Samford breezed at home over 1-6 South Carolina State 77-60. https://samfordsports.com/news/2018/11/2...EM_ID=4000

A real test for a SoCon team is tonight with Wofford at #55 South Carolina. The Gamecocks may be vulnerable though: their 3 wins have been over #216 George Washington, #292 Norfolk State and #331 USC Upstate. They have lost to #60 Providence (67-76, neutral site) and at home to #179 Stony Brook, 81-83 in the second game of the season.
