I just happen to know the people at the engineering firm that was hired to do a feasibility study to rectify the problem. Due to the way the structural support was designed, it wasn't possible to remove the rows of seats needed to allow the correct sideline view.

The architect that was hired for the project was a friend of the president and had no previous experience in designing sport venues. They did visit Idaho State but the only thing the same was the look of the Dome, the guts of the ETSU Dome was totally different. The architect many several critical mistakes, some were corrected but the big one, sightline views, no way.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this. Or we may be talking about two different assessments at different times. The time I'm referring to was, I believe (not positive on the exact frame), the mid- to late-'90s. The *first* time football was considered being killed, but which was not known by most. I was quite close at the time to two of the principals (on the ETSU side of things, one of whose names most of you would know; the other only a few of you would know) involved in checking out the possibilities. The $1 million quoted to me may have been a rough estimate, but it would have involved "destroying" the training room, re-working the locker rooms on both sides (it was postulated that the racquetball courts and the electrophysiology lab could have been made into at least the visiting locker room on the East side), moving the dance offices (Judy Woodruff's) and of course all the offices on the West side would have been severely impacted. But the med school facilities on the second floor there would have been spared. Yet, remember..........there were already plans for (what became) stanton-Gerber Hall, so the plan was already in place to move the med school stuff over to the VA - and the thinking was that the athletic offices could be moved up to that floor - which ultimately happened anyway. The rifle facility would not have been impacted. But - at least as it was told to me - this *could* be done without any structural impairment, as those areas had no load-bearing responsibilities. Lots of concrete and steel would have been busted up, but it *was* feasible. I trust my sources, but didn't actually see any paperwork with cost estimates. $1 million seems cheap in hindsight, but 25 (or so) years ago, that was a lot of money for ETSU. And again, that's just a figure I heard.

My understanding was that altho a lot of the "guts" were different than the original one in Pocatello, that was due to the "filling in" aspects - sort of like deciding on room configurations after the shell of a house is settled on. I'm not hep to the details on the differences. But I do remember that the one out there was originally built for under $3 million, which sounds incredible in this day and time.

But yes, bad choices were made in the design and construction of our dome. Remember how hard it was to get it to keep from leaking? That delayed the opening for nearly a year. On top of the death of one construction worker. Too much input from the financial side (but that's just the way it had to be back then), and not enough from the athletic side. BUT...…….it was still a showplace, and despite it's shortcomings, must be considered a success in the overall benefit it's provided, and the vast array of things it has been used for. It was a product of it's time - both good and bad.

I had a friend who worked on the dome. Two workers were killed during construction, both from falls; one from the roof, and one from the ramp on the west side.

Speaking of turf and prices, does anyone know a rough estimate on what it would take to get the Disney Bucky head off the baseball field? Baseball just posted another pre season update and used the field picture. It just looks awful. It's one of the last vestiges of the old regime.

I agree totally. It should be the E symbol.

Good day to rent the Dome for a playoff game or two.
