Pros & Cons for Withers:

Pros
1 Modernized the football program as a whole
2) Created a supergroup of big dollar donors who could donate specifically to give the team a big time feel (special uniforms, lockers etc)
3) Was a good recruiter. Snagged Vad Lee who transformed our offense (ask SMU).

Cons
1) Commanded such a huge portion of the money allotted for coaching salaries that all his assistants were glorified graduate assistants. There simply was no money left for a solid staff.
2) Teams had terrible defenses. He tried to pound round pegs into square holes because he wanted a certain size/shape of player in each position regardless of whether that person was the best player.
3) Was smug and condescending to our admin, media and fans. He left a distinct impression that the job was beneath him.

So the question is for BobCat2013, how much of this did you guys encounter during his time at TexSt?

Honestly I wish he had another year. Or at the very least that it was handled differently. He has really made progress and we are finally trending upward. Our board is divided on whether he should get another year or not but everyone is in agreement that our AD has to go.

As far as your three cons the first is valid but that's not really his fault but the AD/president's.

Believe it or not our defense has been solid this year. Especially when you consider the ineptitude of our offense. If our offense would have been at least mediocre we'd probably be sitting at 8 wins right now.

For example we gave up 7 turnovers last week to Troy yet we only gave up 12 points.

Well if it makes you feel any better, he played a good amount of freshman and redshirt freshman in his two years here. So, while they may have struggled (in our case on defense) early on, the pieces were in place to mold a very good defense when the new coach came in. They just had to be taught a decent scheme.

I hold no malice towards Withers or Texas St for hiring him away. EW was a shot in the arm to our program that needed it at the time, even if some of his actions and the way he conducted himself weren't always to my liking. While some Dukes felt scorned when he jumped, I kind of felt like we'd ultimately be better for it in the long run given some of the on-field results we were seeing.

Quote:“We were upset. We loved the guy,” Krawczyk said. “He fought left and right for us. I love that man. He gave me an opportunity. I am blessed to have that opportunity.”

Krawczyk also said Withers elevated the team’s culture in his three seasons with the Bobcats.

“Before Coach Withers got here there was no team bond,” Krawczyk said. “Ever since he got here, the bonds between the guys that (started) here stuck. Some of these guys are going to be at my wedding. Some of these guys are my best friends. I am blessed Coach Withers gave me this opportunity.”

Two sides to every story. That said I'm thankful he received the Texas St opportunity.

At the time I said I would of liked to see one more year to confirm my thoughts.

I thought it was a great move for him, and if I had been him I likely would of made the same move. I think what happened to him at TSU would of also happened at JMU but to a lessor extent.

Matt Cunningham said similar things in 'the purge' article. However, all that juice and team bonding by the dudes seemed to maxed out at first round home playoff losses at JMU and 3 wins at TXST.

1.Kleinman. As if he would go from perennial champion to dumpster fire.
2. Houston- LOL yeah. Just because Withers took the money grab I guess they think Houston is dumb enough to do the same thing. Sorry, but you are not the "special offer" that he was speaking about.
3 Keeler- As long as they don't play anyone and don't mind a guy that will blame anyone but himself.

Here's the rest:
https://bobcatfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=2...MU#p344123

Their fans are completely clueless if they think their program is anything resembling an upgrade from all three FCS programs. You can’t poach top FCS coaches just because you’re FBS. You have to actually offer something.

I recall many of us were glad when Withers left. I was one of them. I thought he inherited a ton of talent from Mickey and couldn't do anything with them. Losing first round playoff games to nobodies will not cut it at JMU. He will land on his feet somewhere, but I'm very happy that he is no longer at JMU.

Not in the postseason, the part that matters.

Well, you tell me, what did he do?

First, I will tell you what he didn't do. He didn't do squat in the playoffs. Then, the year he leaves, his replacement beats the smelly Bison in their house, then waltzes into Frisco and destroys Youngstown for the National Championship, then proceeds to go undefeated the following year, barely losing another Natty (should have won) and is now in the playoffs for a third straight year and is, by nearly every measure, among the top three teams in the country.

So, yeah, by all means, tell me what Withers did for JMU football that compares to that, I mean besides ordering everyone in Plecker to switch from yellow Post-its to purple Post-its?

Yeah. He came through P-Lot at 6:45am high-fiving us. Thought it was cool at the time. Not so much after that loss.

This is crazy - read this thread from the the TXST beat writer about how they don't have a qualified trainer - read til the end to hear about Withers own kid.

Sounds like he might be getting out of a really bad situation:

Texas St is a big dumpster fire, and it's not all on Withers.

He might not be the world's greatest coach, but there are other reasons he had 9-3 seasons at JMU and 2-10 at Texas St.

Any coach that goes there is going to struggle, even a great one.

Wow! I read deeper on those tweets and connected stories. That program as a whole is in shambles. Almost makes me feel bad for Withers. I like the reporter- he's not going to give up until people are held accountable.
