RE: Football Scoop: Withers fired
I mentioned it on twitter, but 2 years ago, I had the bobcat club come talk to me asking me to raise my donation.

For point of reference, I was in the top 10% of donors.

I told them I would double my donation on the spot, if they could get me a 30 minute sit down with Dr. Teis. It can be at his leisure, I would go to San Marcos to his office if he wanted, or we could go to lunch, and I'd pay.

I told them my donation was not contingent on me getting the answers I wanted from Dr. Teis, I just wanted the chance to voice my concerns to him and hear why he felt they weren't issues, or find out what they were doing to fix them.

They told me there was no chance of me getting that.

I told them at that point, we have nothing else to discuss. My donations will not be coming any more.

To really hammer home the ineptitude of our department, a month later, I got a letter in the mail thanking me for my donation, and then they sent me my benefits (that I never paid for).

I can guarantee that if you were one of the top 10% of Cajun donors and you promised to double your contribution with a 30 minute audience with the AD, they would be jumping all over themselves to get Maggard on the horn. That would however be an expensive conversation because we have some heavy hitters at the top.

Meanwhile I saw Chris Del Conte agree to a meeting with a random student on twitter yesterday. Del Conte will meet with a random student. Teis can't be bothered by reputable media representatives or top 10% donors (even when it means a doubling of donation or loss of donation).

Yeah, I don't pretend to be a big dog financially. My donation is NOT that big (I'm not hitting 5 figures in donations to them).

But that right there told me they truly don't care about donors unless your last name is Fields, and they burned that bridge with the Withers hiring (Fields was not happy that he not only had no input, he found out at the press conference).

To be totally fair to them, I never mentioned anything about pulling my donation if it didn't happen. I probably would have donated my standard amount if they had even pretended to try, and then told me given the timing, they just couldn't make it happen.

But that without even asking anyone, they knew Teis wouldn't be willing to sit down? That told me all I needed to know.

They sent me Bobcat Club benefits after I stopped donating too. It was pretty cool since I kept season tickets one last year and still got parking.

Just got word that corporate sponsor Benny Boyd is rumored to be on board with the #FireTeis movement and plans to pull all commitments until Teis is gone. If true, that means the heat is fixing to get cranked up on Trauth.

I will say this, if Tx St makes a good hire (which sounds iffy with all the comments about your AD) they will scare the hell out of me. Large student population, nice city, large budget. Sounds like you all agree that you are stuck in a rut until the AD is gone or individual sports will succeed in spite of him.

The big problem with us, and I've said it a bunch... The AD lacks any form of commitment it seems to the team. And that sucks the will out of most coaches.

So making a good hire is good for us... for a few years. But when we stumble (and it'll happen eventually), instead of having the AD step up and say "ok, we had a problem, what do we need to do to fix it?" he's going to say "you did good last year, so don't sweat it." and let it ride.

For pete's sake... When he did that phone interview with the college radio station (that is literally less than 100 yards from his office), he touted the success of our men's basketball team... FROM 2 YEARS AGO.

Most fans are at the point that we believe he doesn't want us to succeed because it means he'll have more work to do (travel plans, marketing, etc. No bowl means he's only forced to do that 6 times a year).

The two years that we reached bowl eligibility, I e-mailed him asking if there was a pre-order system so that the fans could start showing their support (you know, as proof to the bowls that we will travel)... He replied with "there are no plans at this time to do pre-orders."

The man just doesn't seem to get it. And I fear he'll infect another coach with that if he stays on.

Sorry, I was making a poor joke. He would have absolutely been involved in some form of the coordination of extra games (championship, bowl, NCAA tournament) and he would catch flak for the marketing or lack thereof.

I have not sent a donation this year because of the performance of the athletic teams under Teis. There must be concern, because an e-mail was sent out from Denise Trauth regarding the dismissal of Withers. In the email she indicated that "the university has retained Parker Executive Search Firm to assist in finding its next head football coach. Daniel Parker, vice president and managing director, will be leading the search."

I think a good search firm helps and Parker has a good reputation. But it just feels like Teis does not have a clue as to what he wants in a football coach and Trauth is giving him cover.

Yes, but a search firm isn't going to help you actually make the hire. They'll help you organize a list of candidates, make contacts with those candidates to confirm their interest, and provide a profile on each candidate.

It remains up to Larry Teis to go out an interview each candidate, and make the selection he feels is best.

We have used that search firm for Fran and Withers as well

"Well we used a search firm so Teis wasn't actually responsible for hiring Withers". No guys, a failed hire is completely on Teis. And really that's the case regardless of his level of involvement.

A search firm helps in a lot of ways (background checks, salary, buyout). But as the AD of Texas State athletics, what are you looking for? What kind of offense do you like? Do you like the Mike Leach "Air Raid" offense? The Navy triple option? The Nevada Pistol offense? The Chip Kelly spread offense? Or maybe the Wisconsin three yards and a cloud of dust offense? That is before we even get to a defensive philosophy he likes.

Teis said about Withers during a spring practice shortly after his hiring, “He’s passionate and intense, a man on a mission. He’s fun to watch.”

That sounds like a cheerleader.

Normally the 2 most happy days in a college football fan's life are, the day a coach is hired and the day he is fired. It sounds like you guys are not going to enjoy either. 04-jawdrop

I think you misread the take. I say it quite often that Teis had little to no say in the hiring. Not because of the search firm. I think using a search firm is smart, because I also recognize Larry has a crap rolodex. We NEED more names, and a search firm can get those for us.

I say he had no say in the hiring because in Withers' introductory interview, he specifically said "every member of the committee loved him so I wasn't about to cross them!"

It was such an odd statement. He could have said "all of us were in total agreement when we interviewed him that he was the one!" but he chose to specifically talk about how he wasn't about to go against the committee.

That said to me he wanted to go out of his way to show this wasn't his hire, so he wasn't responsible for the results.

Now, according to others, that's not quite how it happened, but it doesn't really change that story (based on nothing more than his presser).

This series of tweets by a local beat writer of ours is TRULY damning of both Teis (AD) and Trauth (Univ. President).

Ugh that is awful. I want this out in the news and investigated. If true, they both need to be gone.
