Kent State vs. Alcorn State
The Flashes welcome Alcorn State to the MAC Center for a 4:00PM tip. ASU is 1-2 with losses to Vandy and Tulsa and a win over Netflix sensation Blue Mountain State.

RE: Kent State vs. Alcorn State
Anybody else concerned that Duling isn’t playing much so far and not at all in this game?

Edit: and then he enters the game with 9 minutes to go and a 28 pt lead.

Axeme, I've expressed concerns about Duling several times. For a prized recruit he sure has been underwhelming so far.

Duling looks exciting when he gets out there but things just don’t click. Some very exciting plays but also a lot of bad ones. It doesn’t seem to change over time. At least the team played well tonight.

DULING ... a square peg in a round hole. Not his fault, just the way it is. Undersized post player, underskilled wing, average athlete, no go-to scoring move, extremely poor FT shooter.

Needs a redshirt year to focus on just being a perimeter player but is needed right now as the third post player. Maybe next year???

RE: Kent State vs. Alcorn State
I'm not sure what the deal is with Duling. He actually did get in in the first half around the time he usually goes in. Then Alcorn scored on back to back possessions and he was benched until late in the second half. I think it's his defense that's getting him in the dog house. He sometimes gets lost on rotations and often leaves his man to challenge someone else's man's shots leaving the boards open. Honestly, I've thought he's looked really under control and solid on offense this year.

I agree that his lack of playing time is pretty odd though. I think we've seen plenty of players that we're glaringly worse than him on defense with much longer leashes over the years. Goodson comes to mind. The one thing I know for sure. This team won't realize it's potential with Duling out of the rotation.

Worth noting Harris finally saw significant playing time today and played pretty well. I thought it was odd that he wasn't able to crack the rotation in the first 3 games.

Wait, BJ Duling is an average athlete? That can't be a serious comment. Half the times he jumps I'm afraid he's going to hit his head on the rim.

I was looking at the roster online. What's the story on Antonio Givens? Is he still around? Redshirting?

He's still around and dresses for every game.

There's more to athleticism than how high you jump ... speed, lateral quickness and more come into play as well.

Ok, but what part is he lacking in? He's definitely not slow. He gets lost on defense sometimes but it's not because he's struggling to keep up. It's generally when he leaves his man to help when he shouldn't be. To me that's why he's so frustrating. He's as physically gifted as anyone I can remember us having.

Listen ... not dumping on Duling. Just saying he is not a good fit right now as a basketball player on this team. Are you judging him as a post player or as a wing player?

Athleticism as a post player is off-set by his lack of size. Athleticism as a perimeter player is off-set by his lack of skill (for that position).

Again, no go-to move at either spot and can't shoot free throws. Still think he is/was a quality recruit, just saying Kent can't develop him for the perimeter right now, and his skills or lack (FT shooting) of them make it hard to be on the floor.

You can't just take a forward and make him a perimeter player. He doesn't have the handles for that nor the shooting ability. He is a forward, for better or worse.

I'm not really judging him as a post or a wing just in general. He's technically playing at the 4 this year but we're not really using him in the post. Thus far we've been kind of interchangeable between 2 and 4.

With that said, as a MAC 4 he isn't actually undersized. Heck Buffalo starts one player over 200 lbs and their tallest starter is 6'8". Duling is listed ar 6'7" 235. He'd be the heaviest and second tallest starter on Akron as well. He's for sure struggling to fit right now. The point I'm making is whatever his problem is, it's definitely not something he's lacking physically.

The bottom line is that if he were as good as advertised, he'd be playing a major role by now.

RE: Kent State vs. Alcorn State
Good as advertised has zero to do with the player. The propaganda machine that guys like me allow to convince myself that a kid is a “steal” or my personal favorite “a good get” can make an honorable mention all state player sound like a Chicago Bull.

As for the game. Looks like the Flashes made an effort to move the ball and it showed in the amount of assists. It also appears that KSU has a couple of nice offensive weapons in Williams and Williamson. After four games it seems that if Kent State can find a way to be consistently competitive in the paint this team should rack up a decent number of wins.

RE: Kent State vs. Alcorn State
Duling was 1st team All-Ohio and a 3 star recruit. But I know what you mean fallsdog about hype. Duling is only at the beginning of his 2nd season, so things could definitely click for him yet. But I wish I had a nickel for every Kent State signee who wasn't as good as the hype. I don't think you'll ever hear a coach sign a player then say, "He really isn't very good, but he may earn some playing time and we need bodies for practice anyway." On the other hand, you have players who were "better than advertised", and of course players who were about what was expected. I suppose the bottom line with EVERY player is to just wait and see.

Kent State signs fallsdog in early signing period.

"He has average vision with below average athleticism", said Senderoff. "It boiled down to the fact that we had one scholarship left. Lets just hope he never gets fouled in the act of shooting because he couldn't hit a bulls ars with a banjo."

Wasn't that also the press release for Antonio Givens? "Yeah, he averaged 3.5 ppg as a sophomore in JC, with 46% Free throw shooting, but he is 6'8", 260, and we only have 4 forwards so far, so yeah, he's better than nothing"
