Game Week: @Rutgers and UDM
I like this time of year when FB and MBB overlap.
I consider Rutgers, not Duke, our early season test.

Reminds me of that Northern Illinois game a few years ago.

If they lose to UDM, the Murphy apologists will have to circle the wagons early this year.

I wonder if we are going to beat the ordinary D-I teams and lose badly to the good ones.
BTW, guys, it is early. If I remember correctly last season we went into a tail spin in January and recovered in Feb and March.
Even college seasons are loooooooooooong.
Even the beloved football team lost 6 in a row last season and 4 this season.

RE: Game Week: @Rutgers and UDM
I looked at the box score and saw some bad, bad things.
Minnie was 0 - 8 shooting. Toure was 1 - 8 from the FT line.
Jackson was 2 - 15 shooting.
When a player or team can't make shots, esp. FTs, something mentally is happening.
The team shot 90% against Boston and next game 18%.
Come on guys. 3 - 17 FTs isn't schemes, coaching, etc. etc.
For contrast, the Washington Wizards are having all kind of internal dissension. Verbal arguments, swearing at the coach and team president. And their defense has been horrible. Defense is effort. Unhappy players don't give 100% on defense. That is where problems first show.
I have no idea what is happening esp. since the team played very well Saturday vs.. Boston U.

You're right. 3-17 at the line is not schemes, it's a lack of mental focus. It's a sign that a team lacks confidence and is not prepared to play. It reflects the coaching.

RE: Game Week: @Rutgers and UDM
Sorry, I disagree completely with that. Murphy's lack of an offensive scheme, and any semblance of a plan on that end of the floor, is infuriating and deserves all the vitriol that we give it on here. His teams are always talented and athletic, but brought down by the "standing around and hoping that the guards create something" offense. However, he can't shoot the free throws for these kids. Free throws are the most basic scoring fundamental in the sport that can pretty much be practiced anywhere at any time.
This isn't the CYO. These are college athletes playing a high level of basketball. The coach can be blamed for a heck of a lot, and rightfully so, but missing free throws falls on the players. There's no excuse for going 3-17. None.

There are probably a bunch of posters here who can shoot better than 3 - 17.
I have never seen anything like that in my life. Go from 90% to 18%.
Nate Silver is probably scratching his head...

Sam I'm sorry but I think the poor free throw shooting does fall within the purview of coaching. Murphy's teams have always been poor from the line. I have always been amazed that when I arrive early to a game how few free throws I see attempted in warmups. I have never seen a practice session but I wonder how much time is devoted to free throw shooting. My guess would be little based on the results.

Jerry, I'm going to disagree with you.
I don't know how a team shoots 90% and then 18%.
That is something I doubt any of us seen before. 'Coaching' isn't a reasonable explanation.
That said, maybe 'chance', like a baseball player who goes 4 - 4 on Friday night and 0 - 4 on both Saturday and Sunday, striking out 4 times.
Just very weird s*it. It happens, rarely...

Steve I can agree to disagree on the coaching issue, just like we do on the use of the zone defense exclusively. No need to beat the dead horse and we do root for the same team.
As far as the disparity of the free throw shooting in the last 2 games, the answer is relatively simple. We made 11 of 12 against Boston as our two best charity shooters, Minnie and Jackson went 7 for 7. Against Rutgers that duo did not get to the stripe at all while Toure went 1-8 after not seeing the line against Boston.

Hopefully we do not look past UDM or they will beat us. UDMs roster was decimated after Bacari Alexander's condescending and derogative outburst aimed at his team.
I have got to applaud UDM, they went out and got a coach who has made the NCAA tournament multiple times. By in large, UDM is probably banking on coach Davis getting them to the tournament within 3 years. They will take their beating this year but next season they will much improved![/align]

I think Jerry is correct on the free throws. Sure any given game, player, or season is susceptible to chance. However, Murphy's teams have a pattern of being bad from the line. According to team rankings.com EMU as a team shot:
2018 68
2017 72
2016 73
2015 72
2014 68
2013 67
In 2016, the best year, the team ranked #65.
