RE: Rice LSU game thread
ESPN manages to insert a discussion about Lebron James into the broadcast of a Rice-LSU game.
Their Lebron hardon seemingly has no bounds.

Nope. Tigers win, 42-10.

What??
Shiny grey OER on deep blue background! Looks classy to me.
Sorry guys, I agree the helmets look bad since our signature OER is invisible.
The pants look like gray sweats also since they lack a leg stripe.
Not our major problem however...which imo is wishful thinking play calling (running between the tackles on first and second down.)

Touchdown Owls!
Nice drive against LSU’s Pierre and Boudreaux (or Trosclair) lineup.

Leebron should have been fired with Bailiff. He has been worthless for the university. A failed takeover of Baylor med school. A decline in our national rankings.
In return he’s received a $15mil+ mansion. Renovated to his liking. A top 20 salary. Lots of trips to China for his Chinese wife. Tuition has increased by probably $25k since he took over. Imagine that. And no one cares.
Leebron sucks. Not sure why this isn’t a big deal.

RE: Rice LSU game thread
General thoughts-
-Aston Walter has been so under-utilized during his career. To some extent Austin too. So hard to recruit talent like that and then we waste it
-Based on this game it seems to me that D'Angelo Ellis should be a receiver full time (maybe he is?). With the ability he showed last night- the combination of him, Cephus, and Trammel could be a pretty good WR group.
-Based on one special teams tackle maybe Jordan Myers should be playing defense. We need more talent on that side of the ball
-the freshmen on defense are encouraging. We still need more talent on the line and in general speed across the field, but I like the looks of the new guys at safety and linebacker
- as we have known for some time OL and QB are the weakest links and have to be addressed in the offseason. I bet we see some juco's there.

It is not true that President Leebron "demanded" to live in Wiess house. The plans for renovating the Wiess house, and simultaneously converting O'Connor House (now Huff House) into much-needed offices, were initiated well before the presidential search began. The reason that President Leebron was the first occupant is that it is considered unseemly in academia to provide a new house for an incumbent president -- hence the occupancy was timed to coincide with the new president. But again, all those plans were put in place before the new president was known. It seems likely that some of the plans for Wiess house were shared with candidates during the search, but it no sense did any candidate initiate or demand it.

I’ve not really been all that happy with the idea of recruiting Jucos at Rice in large numbers. However, it seems to work at LaTech, S Miss, etc. It’s probably going to happen at Rice next season... to help bring up the level of athleticism.

I think that is a mute point since West U is so expensive to live. However, the problem is you do not see Leebron supporting athletics in the public eye. I was wondering what would happen to UH athletics after they hired Ms Khotor as their President. She is very supportive of athletics at UH and in fact demands excellence or you be gone. You see her on TV constantly and on the radio supporting UH athletics. Where is Lebroon? The sooner he is gone the better. RE: Rice LSU game thread
Just returned from Baton Rouge. All in all, I was very happy with our effort and performance. I was expecting things to be a lot worse. LSU played their first team defense until the beginning of the 4th quarter and their first team offense until late in the 3rd quarter. Nice to see a decent Rice fan turnout. There looked to be around 300 or so fans sitting together in the end-zone. Way more than I thought would be attending. Whereas 90% of the LSU fans were gone by the end of the game, the Rice crowd all stayed until the end. I've been incredibly frustrated with our performance this year, but that was not the case last night. The talent differential was exponential, but our guys kept fighting - I was proud of the effort.

The upperclassmen, frankly, haven't shown much under two entirely different coaching staffs and two entirely different sets of schemes now. The idea that there's some untested approach just sitting out there that would have turned them into worldbeaters is a fantasy. Coaching has been a part of why they're 2-22, but the players are a part of it, too. I'm sorry for their experience here -- they didn't sign on to be part of a rebuild, but there's no getting around the fact that they're part of why a rebuild is needed.

I think the real story is how little the EZF has contributed to our recruiting. Early 2015, we were coming off 3 straight bowls, 2 of the 3 bowl wins, and one conference championship, with the EZF finally becoming a reality, and instead of peaking, our recruiting went into the toilet. We are not going to recover in a year.
That is not a statement that we should not have done it. It is merely a statement that we need more than that.
SMU did something a lot more extensive that we did, and have since gone through Cavan, Bennett, Jones, Morris, and now Dykes without finding a magic bullet.
As noted in another post, the Walters were quite possibly the best recruits we've gotten recently, and we pretty much wasted them.

The EZF brought Rice facilities up to par with G5. It's not so much a question of how much better recruiting is with the EZF, as a question of how much worse recruiting would be without it. But no matter how good the facilities, it isn't the buildings that do the recruiting, it's the coaches.

Yeah, the Patterson Center is nice/fine it’s nothing that every other school doesn’t have.
You have to continually invest. We still don’t have an on-campus indoor facility which is bad for a school of our stature.
The thing about that is that it’d help ALL sports, not just football.
