He has such a good relationship with our fanbase. Would hate to see him leave but would understand him wanting to better himself.

If this is a true, consider Gilbert executing a downgrade to move over to conference rival.
We have never had a AD competent or incompetent shift to an in-conference rival. Think about, what if Gilbert was a coach (i.e. Dan Mullen) and tried to pull this off.
I know it's not the same and Gilbert doesn't have the cache(wins vs losses) as a head coach would have.
I'll stay positive and yes look for the lateral move from USM to ECU happen in the summer.

It’s not a lateral move. They have a bigger budget in a better conference.

The fact that you think ECU would be a lateral move just shows how out of touch with reality you are (like so many other USM fans).
