Point of order. Access to the White House is not under the purview of the President. Never has been. If Jimmy in the Mail Room's Mother wants to come surprise him with a birthday cake, she doesn't have to ask the President for permission to do so. Passes are ultimately handled through different departments of the White House and go through the secret service.

No. But Acosta is a White House reporter. His job depends on the White House hard pass. Hard passes take a long time to secure. CNN's argument was that the President can't just pull someone's hard pass to the White House without first granting that person due process. Essentially he could just unilaterally fire whoever he wanted if he had that ability, when most of the people with those passes don't work for him.

I can see where a due process claim comes from. Even though CNN could always send in another reporter, they'd have to apply for a hard pass for that person in order to gain access to every briefing, which takes time and all sorts of background checks. Which would hinder CNN's ability to report on White House events.

Substitute the word "Job" for "Hard passes" in your paragraph and explain why there is a difference.
