OT-Odd play in UH football game tonight
Major Applewhite and Ed Oliver had a heated argument after Applewhite took off a jacket Oliver was wearing (apparently it's a jacket that only active players can wear, and Oliver continues to hold himself out of games). Oliver didn't come out to the field for the second half.

It didn't hurt UH's effort on the field as they're blowing Tulane away in the 2nd half, but something tells me Applewhite and Oliver aren't on great terms these days.

Someone should link the video for me - it seems silly and petty the way Applewhite did it.

I know some people said I shouldn't be making fun of TCU's off-field issues, and I realize UH is on a different plain than Rice athletics right now. But still this can't help UH or Applewhite's future standing with top recruits.

I’m actually 100% on Applewhite’s side on this.

Oliver’s reaction was boorish coming off the field, having to be separated by coaches and teammates.

My guess was that a manager or assistant coach told Ed he wasn’t entitled to wear the jacke and Ed blew him off so Major was told. Now if true whether Major said that if Ed’s knee was to sore to play and he didn’t deserve a jacket I don’t know, but I guess Major (who is close to being Levine’d by Briles) is upset that Oliver being cleared to play has opted out the last few games. I am sure that Ed’s agent (or soon to be agent) isn’t happy either with any actions by Ed that might influence NFL teams where they draft Oliver. The few thousand that are at the game or watching on TV are picking sides.

Yeah I have to agree that Oliver's a bit of a wuss if he feels a need to wear a jacket and a warm-up suit. I mean it's chilly tonight by Houston standards but it's a bit warmer tonight than the last two nights.

He just cost himself money. That's a silly thing to argue with a coach about, even if he's wrong. (not saying he is)

For the first time since 2006, I have a modicum of respect for Applewhite.

I didn't see the interview at the end of the game, but this may get NFL team's to question him even more. He's definitely given NFL teams something to grill him on during interviews at the combine.

Quote:Applewhite said after the game that Oliver left the locker room and that he hadn't spoken to him since, but he emphasized that he wanted the Outland Trophy winner back.

Walking out on your team, even if you're in the right, isn't what NFL locker rooms are looking for.

Especially in that while arguably a man against boys at UH, he won't be in the NFL.

It seems very clear that he bought into the idea that as a 5 star recruit, he could dominate his league and thus get a lot of attention... and play often enough against the big boys to answer the 'competition' question while avoiding significant injury (or even the lowered comparison) of playing against them every week...

This is something we should try and recruit to as well.

But it also seems that Oliver bought into the 'no need to graduate' (based on some comments I've read) which we absolutely we don't want.

Man among boys physically perhaps, but obviously a boy among men emotionally.

Is it illegal to have an agent in college for professional sports?

I don't know that I'd call that a "play" but I'd sure call it "odd." Agree with Hambone, Oliver spent a lot of money last night.
