Liberty @ Kent State
The Flashes welcome the Liberty Flames to the MAC Center on Friday. Liberty is 2-0 on the season with wins over national powerhouses Maine Fort Kent and Trevecca Nazarene. They did lose an exhibition to Virginia Tech 86-70, so they have seen some good D1 competition.

The Flames were 22-15 last season and advanced to the Semi-finals of the CIT . They return their top three scorers from that team. Scottie James is a 6'8 235 pound forward who averaged 13 points and 8 rebounds last season. He is probably the best post player the Flashes have seen so far this season. Also returning are 6'3 guard Lovell Cabill (11 points and 4 rebounds in 2017) and 6'1 guard Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz (9.9 points and 2 rebound last year).

This game will be a good measuring stick with or without Walker. Liberty is probably thinking the same thing. Not sure if it will be OHSAA playoffs or KSU hoops on Friday. But here's to a KSU victory (sorry burden, no prediction this time).

Thanks, fallsdog.

I sure wish the fans were informed as to (1) when Jaylin Walker returns and (2) what the latest projection is as to when Pippen is expected to be able to play substantial minutes.

I had heard 6 games for Walker, and there may be some conditions attached to that. Disappointing for a senior supposedly leader.

Thanks, GFlash68. Six games isn't too bad, although he'd miss the Vanderbilt game. As freshmen and as sophomores, I thought he was significantly better than Avery. Now, I'd take Avery over him in a flash (no pun intended). I hope for his sake he behaves himself.

Did anyone go to that exhibition against Robert Morris about a month ago? Did JW play in it? If not, maybe that counts as a game? Hearing Eric Haut and then Sendy on radio the last couple weeks I don’t think the prognosis on DP is good. Hope I’m wrong.

As for this game, good early season home game for KSU. Flashes need to neutralize Scottie James. If they contain him, the good guys will start 3-0. Here’s to a fun weekend at the MAC Center.

JW did not play in the exhibition game. Hopefully it DID count. Pippen's knee injury must have been pretty severe. In the old days he may well have been redshirted all this year, but I doubt he will be because of current transfer rules.

That was painfully hard to watch. No shooters, no finishers, terrible free throw shooting, careless and poor ball handling. There was some defensive intensity, but that’s about all you can say positively about the mess we saw tonight.

Liberty was in the CIT semis last year. You expect our flagship to compete with that?? Thinking The Mogadore game was the right call.

It really WAS painful to watch. I watched it on ESPN3. Who knows? I recall some of the best Kent State teams looking like that this early in the season.

I'm glad you guys are optimistic. That was the dumbest game I've ever watched us play. I'm sure the trademark Senderhoff offense after Jimmy Hall is the same as the Senderhoff offense before Jimmy Hall. Bad rebounding, bad finishing on LOW PERCENTAGE SHOTS, bad free throws. Sound like 2014 to anyone else? We only scored 23 points in the first half. I don't care where we are in the season, our basketball team should score more in a half than the football team.

Sorry if I sounded optimistic. What I was doing was clutching at straws. It's getting old watching a football program whose seasons worth watching over the past 40 years I can count on one hand and watching a basketball program that was once the class of the MAC slide awfully close to mediocrity. I've watched Kent State sports since 1963 and the only two choices concerning football and men's basketball is to look for the rosy scenario or to just give up all together.

Definitely didn't look good tonight. Seems a little early for gloom and doom though. We're playing what 3 guys that were in the rotation last year? Only four that were on the active roster? If you didn't expect some games like this then you probably need to be more realistic. Not to mention two returning starters haven't been able to play yet. I still see a lot of talent on this roster.

In other action, ADL saw his first action for the Illini in their second game of the season vs. Georgetown. In six minutes he managed two missed shots and two fouls. They’re on ESPN2 Monday night at 11:30 from Maui vs. #3 Gonzaga.

Also, OU got hammered yesterday afternoon by USF and actually looked worse than us. As poorly as we played, we clearly have some deeper talent that needs to learn to play together. Ohio was a real mess on several levels.

I am afraid this is going to be the norm in modern CBB. This is one of the reasons along with the extended season and overblown March Madness that I am slowly losing interest in the sport. Both Akron and NIU lost several underclassmen (starters) after last season with UB rather unique keeping in keeping its team intact. This is why the are going to be a heavy favorite to win the MAC. I expect we will be one of several team at 0.500 at best.

I would feel better if I have not seen this story every year since Rob took over.
2016 was a anomaly. Between Hall showing up in a big way for 4 days and Akron not showing up. I know most Kent fans were expecting us to get smeared by Akron that night. Winning the MAC that year was a bad thing for the program. Now we are forced to abide to a coaching contract that supplies us with bad shooting percentage and a severe lack of boxing out.

RE: Liberty @ Kent State
OLNWFLSH, I agree. It seems that now if you can keep a core group of key players together for a few years, and how you do that today I have no idea, you're going to be very good in your conference even if that core aa a group doesn't have as much raw talent as the opponents.

AlphaFlash, I too was uneasy when they won the MAC tournament that year and Senderoff got an extension. Of course, I was very happy that they won, but I was very uneasy of the extension. Time will tell. The season is young and hopefully Walker will be back soon with a good attitude. Getting Pippen back would really help, but Linder said last night that there isn't even a timetable on that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I fear we are looking at a so-so year.

The last time we were out rebounded for a season was 13-14. This year, last night was the first game we were out rebounded and it was only by 1 and that was largely because Liberty shot over 50% for the game. So it sounds like you think really highly of the talent Sendy recruits if they don't box out but still consistently out rebound the opponent.

I gotta wonder if Nwankwo would be a factor had he stuck around. He's playing at Marian University in Indiana right now. They played Purdue in an exhibition and he had 7 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes. With our lack of size he could've been a help. Then again he might be too slow to play the style we're trying to play.
