Wide receiver recruiting history
I've mentioned before that I believe Coach Carey has improved all around over the last couple of years, including recruiting, but is still dealing with recruiting misses from earlier in his tenure when he was not doing so great. Nowhere is that more evident than the wide receiver position. Below I will lay out who was recruited at that position over the last five years to show how we've gotten to this point. They are listed in the year in which they showed up on the online roster. Before doing that I want to say that I know the guys we have are trying their hardest, and I am pulling for them, but the fact remains that the team is not getting the production in needs from that position.

2014
Kenny Golladay (transfer) - eligibility finished in 2016
Christian Blake - eligibility finished in 2017
Ezra Saffold
David Senior
Skyler Monaghan (walkon)

Golladay was great for the 2015 and 2016 seasons and Blake was an excellent player who was stuck behind some great players (Da'Ron Brown, Tommylee, Brescacin, Deucee Turner). We sure could have used Blake this season. We got nothing out of Saffold, Senior or Monaghan who are all gone.

2015
DJ Brown
Spencer Tears
Adam Buirge
Steven Lee

Brown and Tears are complementary players in my opinion. Buirge moved to safety and Lee did not qualify.

2016
Jauan Wesley (transfer)
Andrew Parchment
Ryan Gibbons
Maalik Todd (Walkon)
Jordan Niemeyer - (Walkon)

Wesley has some good skills but drops a lot of balls. Looks like a number 1 but produces like a complementary guy. Parchment and Niemeyer are gone. Todd is a special teamer and Gibbons hasn't played.

2017
Jonathan Parker - (Grad transfer)
Kelly Weese - (JUCO)
Tyrice Richie
Jordan Robinson
Cole Tucker
Dennis Robinson

Parker and Weese didn't really play and are both gone now. Jordan Robinson is gone, believe he had a kid so he has more important things to do. Tucker and Dennis Robinson could be quite good going forward but are still developing at this point. Tyrice Richie did not qualify.

2018
Rod Alexander - (Grad transfer)
Charles Robinson
Fotis Kokosioulis
Leon Payne
Amir Brummett
Jyran Mitchell
Matt Pollock (Walkon)
Lucas Segobiano (Walkon)

Alexander has not played and Robinson did not qualify. Some of those other guys could be good, time will tell.

As you can see there were a lot of recruiting misses over the years. They were lucky that Golladay fell into their lap. On this year's roster there's nothing left from '14 and a few complementary guys from 15 and 16 and two of those (Brown and Wesley) will be gone after this year. The 17's, 18's and 19's really need to pan out in order to improve that position group.

The big hole in recruiting the last 5 years is 2016. While it did produce some linemen on both sides of the ball, everything else was a miss. I can’t complain about the wrs in 15, 17 or 18(yet). Tears is probably a little better than he’s shown but it’s hard to develope with The qbs he’s had. I agree brown is average to slightly above average. 17 shows promise with Tucker and Robinson. 18 we will just have to wait and see.

I have not been impressed with Tears at all.

I will argue that we have missed on more quarterback recruits than wide receivers. Not only can’t we recruit a QB we can’t devlop the ones we have.

You can only play one QB at a time.

Harnish, Lynch, Hare, Maddie (post WR)

You can throw in various names the last 3 years as fails...Thompson, Hall inc. but Childers was Freshman (or newcomer...don't remember) of the year. Right now a slightly better (more accurate, better armed) qb would not succeed any more with this team. It would have to be a Lynch or Harnish and even then they wouldn't nearly put up the # they did. They played with numerous receivers who are or have had a sniff of the pro game. I don't know the drops on the season but it has to be in the range of 50.

Down 2 TE hasn't helped either.

I haven’t really been either, but there are flashes. Then there’s the off field questions that don’t help. But if he had a good qb I think he would be a pretty good receiver.

RE: Wide receiver recruiting history
Anyone know what happened with JJ Pinckney, the wideout who was supposed to be transferring in from Cincinnati?
