OT: State of VA committing $$$ to Mason/VT for Amazon
Surprised there isn’t a thread on today’s official news. Seems JMU should’ve tried to get in on this. Maybe they did try? Not sure but looks like a major W for Mason and VT.

“To help grow the area's talent pipeline, Virginia committed to double the annual number of graduates with bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science and related fields. It plans to invest $375M for new master's programs at George Mason University's Arlington campus and establish a $1B Alexandria innovation campus for Virginia Tech.”

VT and Mason had a clear advantage here by having established campuses in Arlington/Alexandria.

Amazon will be located in Arlington / Crystal City.

Not saying JMU shouldn’t lobby and try to form a relationship here, but those campuses are literally in Amazons new backyard now. It looks like the Alexandria campus is new for VT, but they already have a large presence in NoVa in Arlington (Near Falls Church metro)

VT has two locations in NoVA. One in Fairfax County at the West Falls Church Metro and another in Arlington in Ballston.

Would be a shame if JMU is left out of this.

Suspect the deals are already mostly done, and part of the package that Amazon agreed to. By not having the same beachhead established in NoVa, JMU was likely not at the table.

May have to go thru legislation, and perhaps there is a way to make some amendments at that point.

Regardless, it would be a great idea for JMU to reach out to Amazon and at least establish a relationship for recruiting/hiring and potential joint research projects. There is a lot of opportunity there even if not included as a primary part of the state money train.

Not to mention the x labs that have gained national recognition.

This brings up a question around JMU's expansion as a National University- satellite campuses and presence. Do you think having a small school/presence in DC would help JMU brand and expand as a National University. Maybe a Political Science/Political Media school in Washington D.C. By name and history we are tied to U.S. Politics as an Institution. We even have some alum that are involved in Politics. I think a presence in D.C. would benefit JMU and our vision long term.

Interested on some of the academic experts (Longhorn, etc.) thoughts on this.

I didn't even realize Va Tech had a campus in Northern VA but clearly it helped them here.

Two of three of JMU's Masters Degrees for Business have classes in McLean.

VT is building a brand new campus in Potomac Yards on Rt1, this has nothing to do with what they already have in Falls Church.

Jmu did have a presence there, even as far back as when Carrier was still in office. Called the “Learning center” or some kinda blah title, but it was there.

Out by Tyson’s/Reston area IIRC.

Been a long time, so I don’t completely recall, I try to stay out of that area like the plague...

Yup, not just a "new campus," but a $1B new campus. Props to Tech for getting in on this. And you know, rising tide and all - while this may most directly be good for VT and GMU, ultimately it's good for any school that has most of it's students from that area and most it's alums ending up there (i.e. JMU)

Yea, I get the stuff for their meet and greets at DuPont. This was/is out Rte.66 way. I just remember driving past it with an old GF and pointing it out. “JMU center for innovative learning” or something.

I think it was one of Carriers baby’s at the fore of this emerging field called “IT”. May well have been folded into ISAT on campus once it was opened.
