If we don’t win at the very least 8 games next year it will be painfully evident this coaching hire was a bust. ....BUT......if.......he keeps up the good recruiting the next guy could very well come in and have spectacular results. Then leave in three years with no talent left on the roster.

That’s assuming the next guy doesn’t recruit.

No QB since Nick Mullens.
OC is not good and was hired because he was basically free.

Find a consistent, capable QB who doesn't turn the ball over 5 times a game.
Hire a young up and comer to run the offense.
Do these two things and we can even overcome poor gameplanning because this conference sucks so bad.

Seems to be the formula. Can recruit, can’t coach. Can coach, can’t recruit.

RE: Hopson = Fedora
Hopson is an offensive coordinator away from winning 10+ games/conf. championship and getting a coaching offer from a school willing to pay 3-4 million dollars. That's the bottom line.

Hopson's problem is more Hopson himself than the OC. Hop has had 3 years to address some of the problems otherwise normally placed on the OC. This lays at the feet of Hop to address them....and he hasn't. Hes not 14 years old. If Hop cant recognize problems and adjust (relative to problems with his staff and specifcally staff's decisions ), then thats on Hop. Hes not gonna change overnight with a new OC....hes prob not gonna change at all. Hes a grown ass man. He will keep making the same dumb*** decisions and mistakes.

RE: Hopson = Fedora
There's no denying that Hopson has proven he can be very stubborn. Again, we all said the same thing about Fedora during '08-'10 when Bra_for_ kept being retained. Hopson still has time to redeem himself, as Fedora did at the end of the '10...by canning Dawson (and definitely Losey).

But we all know this is certain: if we win these last two reg. season games then no one is getting canned.

Agree the conference was better then, but our fans complained just as much about it then as now.

As for Fedora's recruiting, we won't know for a few years, but I think Hopson is better. Fedora started with a splash but most of the top rated ones never played for us. His last class really went down. I believe Hopson's last couple of classes are far superior to Fedora's.

Another thing we tend to forget about Fedora, in light of his exceptional last year, is that people were really starting to get fed up with him after 3 years of 7 wins and no defense. Attendance was dropping fast, and people were starting to talk about needing to make a change. I believe that if he had not made a change in the D he would not have lasted another year.

Hopefully, Hopson will make an offensive change just like Fedora did on D.

I did not remember things this way, so I looked them up.

Code:
ATTENDANCE
        TOTAL     AVG         RECORD
2008  180,609  30,102           7-6
2009  184,178  30,696           7-6
2010  176,400  29,400           8-5
2011  170,402  28,400          12-2

There really wasn't a precipitous drop in attendance at any point. In true USM fashion, our best year was the one with our worse attendance numbers.

The worse part in this ordeal is that we're stuck with Hopson for 4 more years.

Wow after seeing that I had to look it up as well.

2011 home opener against La tech - 22K
SE La -after the marshall loss - 27K
Memphis- after the uab loss - 26K

horrible numbers

just to put in in perspective E12loss home opener against ECU - 34K

I think we are a running back away from enjoying success also. In the Fedora era, we had Damion Fletcher and Tracey Lampley. I don't think Hop is capable of securing a back with their credentials.
It all boils down to a solid pass/run game vs a solid defense.

La Tech was in a hurricane. Memphis was in the rain.

ECU was the ‘sell out’ game where they basically gave away thousands of tickets to businesses to fill the seats. We made more money off 20k in the stands against Kentucky than we did with ECU.

I’m not Nostradamus but the running back stable we have now is pretty dang good. Mayberry may be a difference maker. Mosley and Anderson are solid. I don’t think running back will be a weakness going forward.

For the most part our problem hasn't been running back talent...it's been play-calling (Dawson) and OL performance (Losey).
