Not sure "deserve" is an accurate word. Being one of two wins for a horrendous Navy team, losing to Tulane, and posting 7 wins vs teams with losing records (5 are in CBS' Bottom 25, 1 an FCS), blowing a double digit 4th quarter lead to UCF, is hardly "deserving" of playing for a conference title. This team has vastly underachieved. Should be a legit 10-1, 9-2.
That's one way to look at it. Another is to say that we're neck-and-neck with Houston as the best team in the West. Sagarin has us within a point of each other as the best team in the West, and it's not close. So whoever wins the game, will be the undisputed best of the West and "deserve" the CCG.
Yes, we could have a better record. And the East in total, is better than the West this year (for a change). But that doesn't mean we're not the best team in the West and don't deserve the CCG.
As poorly as we played at Tulane and with the to's at Navy, putting those aside, the team is playing pretty good right now. Maybe as well as we expected coming into the year.
