WAC basketball week 2
UT Rio Grande Valley had a very good road win against their rivals Texas A&M Corpus Christi 76-69.

And, Grand Canyon defeated Jacksonville by 17 but it wasn't pretty 76-59. After build up as much as a 25 point lead, the Lopes looked tired toward the end of the second half trying to match a scrappy Dolphin team's effort to maintain their lead.

But it looks like Chicago State has the right head coach for the job. Give Irvin a few years to recruit Chicago and the Midwest and he might actually make the Cougars competitive in the WAC.

Too bad. Would have been a fantastic win. KenPom.com gave them only a 2% chance of winning and predicted they would lose by over 20 points.

Again if anyone is interested, Cal Baptist beat Oral Roberts on their court with a half court buzzer beater.

On a side note former GCU player Kerwin Smith played in the game for ORU.

A wise man once told me 7 minutes ago, "Any team that Kerwin starts for must really suck." He wasn't wrong.

I just enjoy the 'Expect A Miracle' slogan on the court. There was a miracle last night, just not for ORU!

Chicago State and CBU are showing that there may not be any easy wins in the WAC. The schedule gets tougher for CBU with Tulsa on Friday and 6th ranked Nevada on Monday.

I did not expect CBU to be an easy win.

I did not expect CBU to be an easy win.

Some teams have a very workman-like approach to every opponent, no matter their record. It is the kind of disciplined approach WAC fans have come to expect from a squad like New Mexico State. There are other teams who have a knack for playing down to the perceived level of competition, which is who CBU and Chicago State will pose the greatest threat.

I have enough self-awareness to put GCU squarely in that group. Perhaps it is the bitter taste of losing the second half to Jacksonville still in my mouth, but it isn't that hard for me to imagine the Lopes losing to either or both Chicago St and/or CBU the first time through conference play.
