Just playing bad basketball. No boxing out on defense...and making stupid mistakes on offense.

A couple more misses to get it within 2 or 3. Now UCLA back at the line.

RE: WBB at UCLA
Tough loss. UCLA wasn't a great team but we were just too timid for much of the game, and rebounding killed us.
I did see some signs of life late. I think Jasmine Smith will improve as the season goes on once she gets used to the speed of college basketball. We do need at least 1 big player to help with the rebounding. Rainey will improve too once her conditioning returns. She had a nice spin move late but couldn't complete the nice play.
Unfortunately the two losses already put us behind the eight ball where we want to be. If those are the two best teams we play this season (and I'm not sure that's the case), we'll win quite a few games. But we have to improve our effort because this wasn't a good 40 minutes of basketball at all.

Just back from the game. We had 60 fans there. We even had a lead at 24-23. It was a great setting for the team in a first class arena. The usher thought there were 2000 people at the game. UCLA had a full band outnumbering the Rice fans. UCLA also had their cheerleaders and dance team. Nice tribute for the Veterans and first responders. However, I saw no first responders as they are all fighting the local fires. UCLA looked awesome in the pregame warmup with great passing. Their whole team looked like great athletes. I was impressed we only lost 59-50. This team did get to the final eight last year although two of their players were drafted.

RE: WBB at UCLA
I get the sense Langley had set up the entire offense to work through our two bigs, especially Mulkey, and had practiced that offense approach all through the Fall. Now, with Mulkey out, a new game plan needs to be devised, and it has yet to take hold. Tonight there was no offensive approach at all, and absolutely no movement in the half court offense. That's a recipe for disaster, especially against a solid and tight defensive team that takes away the 3 point shot. Smith and Wiggins have to start looking for their shot.

RE: WBB at UCLA
We just have to start playing more aggressive. Wiggins, Smith, Swayze, and co. have to start coming hard off screens/picks and attacking or we're just going to aimlessly pass the ball around the perimeter. Probably the most preached thing by both Rhoades and Pera on the men's side was "attack, sit down in the paint, and look for the open shooter." It's simple but something that I think is needed for the women's team. We're either not driving or driving with blinders (i.e. Ogwumike's 8 turnovers).
As for Mulkey, our defense has been fine results-wise even if we're giving up some decent looks. She should shore that up and also provide a rebounding boon. But she's definitely not going to step into the lineup and solve our offensive problems.

Disagree with you on both counts. Our defense has been awful the past two games. Sure, the results don't look bad on the scoreboard, but lots of open shots, frequent uncontested layup and poor boxing out. As for the offense, I'm not saying Mulkey is going to be a prolific scorer; however, her presence allows the offense to go to her. The guards bring it up and pass into Mulkey, who will likely be double teamed; thereby opening up someone on the outside or cutting to the basket. I do think Langley planned for her to be a VERY big part of our offensive philosophy.

I'm not saying our defense has been good, just fine. Sure, there have been lapses and breakdowns. But the defensive efforts in both games have been decent enough to give us a chance to win. I saw some open shots but I don't think it was nearly as bad as you think. Rebounding I completely agree. Need to finish possessions better. But in the end, a good (probably slightly over-ranked) team was held to 37/22/65 with 17 TOs.
To your point about Mulkey, I just didn't see that kind of impact when I watched her games at Oklahoma. She's a menace on defense and will grab a fair share of rebounds just because of her height. But she isn't the type of player who acts as a focal point of the offense. From what I remember, most of her baskets were dump-offs. I'm honestly really fascinated to see how she's going to factor into Langley's offense because it doesn't feel like she'd fit at all. Our bigs always set up in the high post and play primarily on the perimeter. I can't imagine Mulkey thriving in that role apart from the occasional pick and roll.
Regardless, it's disappointing seeing early season regression on both sides of the ball.

RE: WBB at UCLA
Negative turn overs (-3) and out rebounded (-12 OR) resulted in UCLA taking 15 more shots than Rice. Both teams shot approximately same FG % (from 2 and 3).
Our offense looked disjointed as UCLA sagged off our center, daring her to shoot (which she didn't do)--- result: 5 UCLA players defending vs our 4 offensive players. Opponents did this to us late last year too...

Shouldn't have been too much of a surprise given that our asst coach is now their asst coach. UCLA even mentioned in the game preview that they felt comfortable knowing our game plan for that exact reason. Rebounding... that's a different story. They just boxed us out of our own basket.

Didn't watch the game and sounds like there were multiple areas where Rice needs to improve, but this stat sounds pretty indicative that having our big players healthy would have made a ... big ... difference.

In the end, both the UCLA and TAMU losses will look fine on paper. It's the actual play on the court that was concerning to about everybody who watched.
