2 Bball discussion questions.
A. One of the few good things about the not so impressive game 1 performance is that we will be able to see right away the coaching ability of Hardaway. It is a pretty clear task of cleaning up some frosh mistakes, developing players ( with at least decent talent), and improving a team over the course of the season.
B. J Martin and the frosh guards: imho, it looked like penny prefers martin at the 3 spot. Martin definitely looked like an effective scorer. He and davenport easily had the best game of the Tigers. There were times Martin played PG. We may need his experience at PG. But, if Martin plays PG, then ALO and Tyler do not get as much game experience at the PG.
I would love to here some of your responses to either of these topics.

Martin is not a good point guard. If he is playing point guard, we are not a good team.

I disagree. I think he is a good point guard who has not always had the best supporting cast (teammates) while at memphis.

I think you let alo take his lumps. If he gets overwhelmed then sub in brewton for a breather.

I see it more like this, too.

I just don't understand the negativity about the first game, but whatever. The team played poorly in the second half and still won by 15. The defense forced 26 turnovers. Again, whatever.

Martin isn't playing point guard. He had a few rotations at the point the other night. Ok fine. Like others have said, he's just not a good point guard. Not even close. Penny knows that but there will be times when he'll rotate there. Not a huge deal.

Yep. We won by 15... One year ago we were needing last second miracles to slip past teams of the same quality as TT.

Probably none of this is even discussed had the guards shot better from three. And I’m just saying better, not good.

Also, Parks not playing makes a huge difference.

Three “if’s”......

If we shoot better we will be fine.
If Parks plays we will be fine.
If Lance Thomas gets to play, things will be better than fine.

Two of those three “if’s” are doable, provided parks is mostly healthy and not something serious.

Everybody is freaking out... People need to understand we will take our lumps this year, its penny's first year as a coach @ the D1 level and we are starting 2 undersized guards.

If Wingett and Tyler just make 1 3 a piece we win by 21 and people arent freing out as much. Its 1 game. Take a xanax and chill out

I agree with everything except Martin had more than a few possessions at point. And when he did, the offense stagnated. Not sure what Penny was wanting to do with that when ALo, Brewton and Harris need all the possessions they can get at point. But I defer to the staff.

I can see ALo playing 32-35 minutes a game at point as the season progresses.

This team is not planning on taking lumps from anyone. The newcomers have played vs the best players in the country in AAU for the last 3 years or so. And returnees learned a lot from last season and we have 2 all conference players from that group: Martin and Davenport. Just need Parks healthy. The speed of this group is a huge advantage. Rebounding has to be there too.

WTG SNOW!!! COGS Dancing wiener & a cookie for ya!!!!!

Jeremiah @ the three is perfect for his skillset, against threes he creates enough of a mismatch, that he can practically score at will...he has enough quickness defensively to cause problems there as well.....Much better for him to attack small forwards and bigger guards as apposed to smaller players and it makes the lineup VERY quick...kudos to Penny, when Tyler gets in rhythm along with other young guns ....look out 04-rock

I certainly felt like there was much more positive than negative to take away from the first game.

RE: 2 Bball discussion questions.
Jeremiah at the 3 allows our best players to be on the floor while benefiting from his scoring and ability to break the defense down. The beauty of the frosh guards is that Penny can always go to Brewton to help if either Alo or Tyler is off yet still have one on the floor to play through their mistakes. We have to get the guards to stay in front of their man and stop reaching. It they can do that the speed will be an advantage especially on the long rebounds that come from missed 3's.

As Penny's teams (not just this one) come along & mature, I think having position labels for the players won't matter much. I think we will begin to see position-less BB with the exception of Alo at PG on offense.
