Basketball in the MAC
Week #1:

Just watched Buffalo beat #13 W Virginia by 7 or so points in OT. The game was played at W Virginia but Buffalo played fearlessly, with a lot of grit and determination. W Virginia is big, quick, skilled and very well coached but so is Buffalo. However Buffalo had something they did not and his name is CJ Massinberg. CJ dropped 40+ points on them. This kid is fantastic and definitely a contender for MAC POY. I was very very impressed with Buffalo's relentless defense. I know they gave up a lot of points but this is partially due to their running game and getting up and down the court. Well done Buffalo!!! Earned a lot of respect for our conference and will help us get two bids into NCAA tournament if we do our part.

I also saw Toledo play at Oakland and win. This is a nice victory for the Rockets. Jordan Nobles fouled out so I didn't get to see him play much. We're going to miss his experience!!!

RE: Basketball in the MAC
After watching Buffalo, Toledo, EMU and BSU over the weekend, this is how I would rank the top 4 teams:

1) Buffalo - very talented and 4 players deep except at center. Their only weakness is no backup center for Perkins. They play with relentless pressure, confidence and they're very athletic.

2) Ball State - they looked very good last night on the road against ranked Purdue. It was a 1 possession game at half time, but Purdue got too many home cooking calls ( just like UofM does when we play them at Chrisler). Ball State beats Purdue on a neutral court. Perhaps BSU has more overall talent than any MAC school excluding Buffalo.

3) EMU, we simply have more athletes than most Mac schools.

4) Toledo. They will be very solid and capable of beating anyone in the conference.

No other MAC school has any remote chance in winning the MAC!

Some day time basketball going on today.

Northeastern just dominated Alabama 68-52. They look very good.

Ball State played decently against #16 Virginia Tech, but couldn't make it closer than 9 or 10 points for most of the game. Final: VT 73 - BSU 64.

Thanks for the scores Frank!

Ball State is the team to beat in the West. Looks like they could have beaten VT if the game were on a neutral court.

It will be interesting to see if the Duke game hurt our confidence going forward.......

RE: Basketball in the MAC
I feel like Ball State does this every year and then is mediocre in MAC play.

James Whitford has owned the zone for about 3 years before our last game, where we dismantled them. Pressure Persons full court (Ellison did great with that) and make them rush their half court offense. That worked like a charm. We will see if Whitford can counter that this season.

Luckey, the game was on a neutral court, College of Charleston.

It is a tourney game. And not at a school site.

Hmmm thanks. After we get Kansas out of the way, we need to be competitive against Rutgers and TCU. I believe Rutgers beat Drexel by 30 points..........

We need to get Minnie going and soon because he has the talent to be a top 5 player in the conference.

Finally, Rafus looks lost on the court. I'm not going to say Jaquan Hart but he needs to bring it!!!

Yep. I keep having to force myself to remember that Rafus is a freshman. Sometimes, it takes people time to get used to the speed of college basketball, where they aren't automatically the best player on the floor anymore.

His talent is evident. Once the game slows down for him, he will be more effective. It would be great if he progresses enough to be in the rotation by the time MAC play starts, but don't get your hopes up.

Northeastern came back down to earth today, getting routed by Virgina Tech. Still, they've looked good thus far. Will be a tough road game for us.

Ball State plays Alabama (who Northeastern defeated) at 1:30. We'll see how Ball State does against a mid-level P5 team.

Sam, i hope you are right on Rafus. We're going to need him off the bench if we have any chance at winning the MAC tournament.

Ball State gets smoked by Alabama. Best 1-3 team in the country?
