any team watching any game tape at all would be stupid not to half, 3/4 court trap us. WE give it up more than a hooker in vegas

SOFT! Something needs to freaking change. This is NOT acceptable. Play the guys that will bust it and don't play scared out there.

Nothing more fun than "searching for positives"....I guess I was being too optimistic at a 10 point loss....

We look so good in spurts... If we could just find a way to get that kind of effort for 40 minutes. Long way to go, no need to panic just yet.

Yep, the spurts when we aren't throwing in subs. Time to change up the PG at least to try things out. I would like to see Joc at point.

I couldn’t disagree more. He’s a good backup at PG, but no. Just no.

Because the current lineup is winning?

Yeah, Toews is our PG like it or not. He's going to have to play through his mistakes. He only had 3 turnovers tonight, an improvement from the first 2 games.

No. Just because we are getting beat by teams favored to beat us doesn’t mean we abandon our PG.

Smh.

Exactly. Thaaaaank you. Like I said before. Let this team get a few CAA games under their belts before we go off the deep end.

RE: UNCG - 11/13 - CAA.TV
Sorry, but this feels like the start of another lost decade. Cocok will keep us in games this year, but unless he can stay on the court 40 minutes, we're going to be mediocre. I can't even imagine what we will look like next year.

Since we aren't going to press and try to create turnovers that lead to buckets, my only suggestion would be to start O'Connell over Cylla. He brings energy, defense, rebounding and smart ball movement to the floor. And we need defense more than anything, since our offense relies on it to get in transition.

Personally, I like our starters. I would give O’Connell more minutes. I’m not in favor of all the subs we tend to pour into games and drastically changing the rotations. That’s what led to us losing that 2nd half momentum, IMO. All of a sudden we put inexperienced players in against one of the better teams we’ll face all year and they made us pay. There was no reason for that subbing. We weren’t in foul trouble and we were scoring and playing excellent defense at the time.

In all honesty, when I saw our schedule... I thought we’d be 1-2 in this stretch. UNCG did the same thing to us last year. It would have been nice to steal a game at home from UNCG or Stanford but the fact is we were outmatched. The game I feel like we significantly underperformed and should have won was Campbell.

I’m understand your feelings on the decade, especially for those of us that have been around the program for a while now. Hopefully playing teams a bit more our speed and talent level in the CAA will help. I do think we need to build an identity in terms of basketball style though. McGrath is going to have to keep learning the hard way this isn’t UNC and you can’t play UNC style with CAA level talent. You have to find a mid-major style to hang your hat on. Like we said before, Wes Miller is a great example of that. IMO, if he didn’t change his coaching style a couple years ago, he’d probably be out of a job and be someone’s assistant somewhere. Instead, he’s built an identity for UNCG and a winning program. That’s long been a concern of yours that I agree with.

RE: UNCG - 11/13 - CAA.TV
What people missed with Keatts was his overall philosophy for a midmajor He focused on getting great scorers regardless of size. Some players are offensive players and can flat out put the ball in the basket, but most can't. Those who can score AND have size, don't come to a UNCW or any midmajor. So, what you are left with are smaller guys who can score.

BUT, their lack of size is a defensive liability. Hmm, what to do? PRESS. It removes the size disadvantage and allows these great scorers to pressure the ball, use their speed, and create turnovers for open court buckets. It also shortened the shot clock and forced the opponent to shoot quicker than they wanted.

IF we pressed on defense, ala Campbell and UNCG, this team might be 3-0 right now. We'd have beaten Campbell and Stanford. We'd have had a very close game with UNCG, and Cacok would have been the difference in getting us the win. Fornes and Taylor would be KILLING it with Toews running the point, because they can both flat out score in transition. McGrath doesn't need more evidence. He just got SMOKED by UNCG and lost to Campbell because of the press. He followed a coach who turned a train wreck around in one year and made the NCAA's two straight years with the press. He still has players on the team who KNOW the press and ran it under Keatts. He needs to learn to change NOW, not some time in the distant future. If he doesn't change this year, and we are mediocre again, his ability to recruit is going to diminish significantly.
