Rice cross country at NCAA South Central Regional
Friday morning, both teams will compete in the NCAA South Central Regional at Texas A&M.

The women, currently ranked 4th in the region, will battle for 2nd place with Texas and SMU. The women will run 6K (~3.75 miles). Arkansas will win, but the 2nd of 2 automatic spots in the NCAA Championships will be up for grabs. I believe that SMU will do it.

The men will run 10K (~6.2 miles) and come into the meet ranked 11th in the tough region. Arkansas and Texas will finish 1-2. A great meet for Rice would be 5th, but I think 8th or 9th would be a good effort.

Only one senior (Brad Dohner) on either team.

Men appear to be running pretty well at the 7.7km split. 4th place right now.

Looks like the men finished 4th behind Arkansas, Texas, and A&M... Some things never change, haha.

At least we managed to beat UNT, UH, and LSU.

Those actually seem like pretty solid results, though certainly we'd hope for teams qualifying for the next round.

Congrats to Lourdes for the individual qualification, and good luck at the next race.

You don't know what you're talking about. This was a great effort by the guys - their best finish in the region in more than a decade. They were seeded 11th and finished 4th - even better than the most optimistic projection.

Congratulations to Coach Jon Warren and the team.

And did I say otherwise?

My first comment was an athletics-wide joke/comment, not meant to diminish a good performance by the XC team.

Maybe you know this, but it wasn't clear from the phrasing employed and I want to be sure others reading are aware: the "next round"/"next race" is the NCAA Championships (Sat. Nov. 17; Madison, WI). Regionals is the first round before nationals but it is also the last round, and given the relatively small number of teams/individuals that are taken for nationals, IMHO XC might have the hardest postseason to make in NCAA sports.

Great job by the Owls today and 04-bow to Lourdes!

Thanks, illiniowl. The reason for my unclear statement is I couldn't remember in the moment if there was an East/West round next, like in track and field, or just nationals. And for that matter, I can't remember if T&F has regionals, then East/West, or just East/West.

And I don't feel like looking it up right now. But thanks again for the clarity.
