Hofstra 72

Final. Over 7,000 in attendance today.

There's definitely a good vibe going on right now in our conference. I haven't felt this positive about Conference USA Basketball in a very long time.

I attended this one, was a great game, we got a little lazy and sloppy at times but made runs when it mattered. Definitely going to miss Burks and Elmore next year. Hofstra was a very good test and should contend for the CAA from what I saw. That actual attendance was over 7,800, and a great atmosphere for the team. Kinsey didn't get a dunk in this one, hofstra played good D to prevent alot of 3 balls and running the floor for dunks. Our center is coming along, he actually played more minutes than I thought he would, his presence was noticed while on the floor, something we didn't have much last year.

The future looks bright even when we lose Elmore, Burks and Watson. As much as I love Jarrod West, Justin Wright-Foreman was just shooting over his defense in the 1at half, West is 5'10 and Wright-Foreman 6'1. When they switched and put Taevion Kinsey on JWF in the 2nd half that slowed the kid way down, JWF only had 9 points in the 2nd half compared to 25 in the 1st half.

Either by the end of the year or the beginning of next year Iran Bennett will be unstoppable. He has shown flashes in both exhibitions and now both regular season games on what he will become, when he becomes more comfortable playing facing the basket (He had always played with his back to the basket). A few weeks ago the kid bent one of the backboards in practice. That's about as close to breaking one now, since its almost impossible to break or shatter a back board anymore. When Bennet learns to head fake and get the man on him in the air he will either score or go to the line each time he touches the ball. He has a spin move from the middle of the lane that is lethal when he also learns to just dunk the ball each time rather than try and lay it in.

The lackadaisical play in a few stretches can be chalked up to the beginning of the season and the new players actually learning their roles. I don't think it's really anything to concerning right now.

The one I noticed most was Jannson Williams, not sure what his issue was, the others, just a little sloppy, but not really lazy.

There were a few plays, not many where I noticed that Jannson, Tavion and Darius didn't switch on. These plays resulted in us either fouling or not boxing out for the rebound properly. And if that is all we really have to worry about fixing for most of the year then we will be just fine.

Where we are now than where we was when Dan took over is complete night and day. We had not played basketball this soundly since the Huck days (83-89).

I love watching fat/big guys from high school come into college and learn to play the game and trim down. Not trim down to slim. Some guys will never be slim in their lives just like Jeremy Evans from Western could never put on weight even during many years in the NBA.

A couple come to mind for me that I loved watching develop to forces.

Popeye Jones was sloppy fat coming out of h.s. Murray State picked him up. He supposedly played shortstop on his h.s. Baseball team. I believe it. It was a tiny school and he had GREAT hands. By the time he left Murray (who I hate with a passion) he was a primetime baller. He’d slimmed down and then had a really nice career in the NBA.

Chris Marcus barely made his high school team. But he was 7’0 and had the same great soft hands Popeye had. By the time he left Western he was a consensus All-American. He broke a foot and tried to come back and developed a drinking problem to deal with the pain and also the fact that he’d never really loved the game and most definitely did not love the attention that came with being 7’0 tall and an All American. In spite of that he was drafted by the NBA. They loved him. Just never worked out.

He was a gentle giant but became a force in college ball. I hate what happened to him. He was a soft spoken kid. I spoke to him multiple times when he sat out his first year as a prop 48.

I’ve never seen Iran play yet but have followed you guys talking about him. I love when a heavy kid develops. I had some in baseball when I was coaching that had been made fun of for being fat. That is until I worked with them and put them on the hill. Then nobody was making fun of them. They were diving on their fastballs. Fat boys revenge.

I hope he turns into a force in CUSA except when we play of course. We have a freshman here we already love and it’s not Bassey. Oh, we love Bassey but we know he’s gone in a year. This kid will be special. Watch out for him. Tolu Smith.

Stans likes bigs. Lol.
