I can only think of five crazy reasons.

1) Unused timeouts are deducted from Carey's pay. We need to make as much TV money as we can from MACtion.

2) Carey was trying to "ice" the QB.

3) Was there really something about that formation that Carey thought might get past the Huskie defenders?

4) Carey was trying to rub Toledo's offensive futility in their faces. Kind of like spotting a weaker opponent ten points in a game of one-on-one, or this classic scene:

5) Or maybe he just can't figure out timeouts.
I was thrilled by those timeouts. He forced toledo to run on back to back plays because If niu stopped them on 3rd down the Huskies would have enough time to get down the field. Might have been his best timeouta i can remember. Very agressive. Forced toledo to be passive.

I was still upset that niu didnt run for the first on 2nd and 1, stop clock then throw a hail mary to end the half. In fact many in the stands wanted them to try.

If Carey is conservative before the half and lets the time run out, he is an idiot.

If Carey is aggressive before the half and calls his timeouts to try and get the ball back, he is an idiot.

My god 03-banghead

I think the part that was odd is that he was aggressive to get the ball back, calling timeouts. Then when he got the ball back in decent field position he just ran out the clock instead of staying aggressive. Why call the timeouts if you are just going to run out the clock? Maybe he thought the defense might get a turnover and return it for a TD and that is why he called the timeouts??? I don't know.

I thought the same thing. Very weird to call the timeouts and then not try to score. I guess he thought the 30 seconds or whatever weren't enough but they were at the 50 yard line after one play. Spike it, complete one pass and try a field goal. To be fair we don't know what's going on in the coaches' headsets. We all blame Carey but maybe the O coordinator couldn't get it together.
Agreed.

We were at our own 49...clock running. 12 yards gets us to the 38...so like a 55 yarder? with 0 timeouts left?

I would have liked them to try something too, but saying it's some 'unfathomable' coaching decision is just inaccurate.

You were also with the wind so a 50+ yard field goal was make-able with your kicker. A 1st down stops the clock, so does a play going out of bounds. Why not go for it? Toledo was getting the 2nd half kickoff. If you can get a FG and go up 20-9 at halftime that is a lot better than 17-9 with UT getting the ball to start the 2nd half.

I would have preferred to have them try to get another score. I just wouldn't put that up there with the other mind boggling decisions Carey has made.

I'm just not sure I've ever seen a team take a knee at the 50 yard line. If I have seen it , I cant recall. What i dont understand with Carey, I don't understand what drives his decisions. When you think he should be aggressive he isnt and vice versa. It's almost like there is a magic 8 ball he shakes to determine what to do, its just totally random
