It's a combination of things. NIU has a good defense. I said before that I believe it's the best defense from a MAC team in many years. That said, the game was also at NIU and I don't believe that Utah's offense was really playing that well early in the year. Moss was dealing with an injury as well for them. Put all of that together.
No doubt, NIU's defense is good. But do you think a team like Buffalo gets held to 10 points against NIU? I don't.
Hopefully we'll find out about Buffalo. Also, remember that NIU kept BYU completely out of the endzone.

RE: Train wreck
This game breaks down pretty easy. The defense played really well early, but Peters seemed to be too amped up and was overthrowing everything including touchdowns. Too many missed opportunities. Pretty soon the defense is on the field too much. Peters had some passes dropped, too. There were way too many missed tackles, but there were some really nice solo tackles that saved big gains. penalties were down. Toledo should win the next two. They had there chances against NIU, EMU, and UB. The QB transition was a bigger deal this year than I thought it would be.
NIU is a pretty good team. Good luck against Buffalo.

RE: Train wreck
This was always going to be a bit of a transition year. I believe many were saying 8-4 or an outside shot at 9-3? Disappointed to be sure, but next year to me will be the most important for Candle.....from deciding on the QB to developing what seems like an awful lot of young talent. What's been most apparent over the last couple of years is the drop-off in O-Line play....that would be at the of my "get fixed" list
As for NIU....props to them. Argue all you want about OOC schedule....It's a solid squad. The game with Buffalo should be interesting.

I get it and it was BYU's lowest total of the season, but IMO, Buffalo's offense is better than BYU. I think that it is very, very tough to run the ball against NIU but the pass is your best shot as long as you can get the ball off. NIU does lead the country in sacks. Buffalo is built a little better for throwing the ball than BYU, Toledo, EMU, etc. That's why I believe Buffalo can score more points against NIU.

It could be a heck of a battle and good for the national TV spotlight it will be under.

Exactly! If you don't have a QB in this league, you won't win it. The inability to complete passes and drives killed the defense. I thought the defense has played better from Buffalo on, but the lack of execution by the offense really undermines their effort.

NIU doesnt have a QB and they’re 6-0. There’s other ways to do it.

Be realistic 7.....when was the last time a school won the MAC Title without a good QB? NIU might do it this year, but Buffalo will be favored in the MACC and they have a good QB.
A defense similar to NIU's this year is your only way to win the MAC without a good QB, and we don't even know if NIU will be able to win it this year. And a defense similar to NIU's doesn't come around that often. It's been years since a MAC team has had a defense as good as NIU's is this year.

It’s certainly easier with a great QB, yes lol.

The lowest rated qb to win the macc in the last 12 years was Drew Hare in 2014. He was the #5 rated qb. And he probably wouldn’t have won it if the #1 rated qb, Matt Johnson, didn’t get hurt that season. If Childers wins it it will be an anomaly.
