MyBB WBB: Dukes host George Washington (Thu, 7pm, MadiZone)
GW finished 19-14 overall and went 10-6 in the A-10 a year ago. As a 5-seed, they made a miraculous run through the A-10 Tournament last season winning 4 games in 4 days to cash their ticket to the NCAAT. They lost at Ohio State by 42 pts in their NCAAT opener.

This will also be their season opener. Looking forward to seeing what could be Coach O's best team. We'll see.

Side note, the Dukes' Nov 20th game at Hampton is now listed to be streamed live via ESPN+.

FWIW, Game Notes... https://jmusports.com/documents/2018/11/...f?id=12282

JMU with projected starters being 1 Sr. + 4 Jr's. "Get old, stay old"

THIS WEEK: VS GEORGE WASHINGTON
James Madison will host George Washington in the 2018-19 season opener. The two schools have faced 10 times in program history with the Dukes leading the series 7-3. The last time the two tipped off was November 27, 2007 when JMU took the win 80-55. JMU is 4-0 when playing in Harrisonburg against George Washington.

Whoever put together the game notes needs to do a better job proofreading.....notes list Ashley Langford as the Graduate Assistant Manager and no mention of Ashley Perez (who IS the graduate assistant). Email has been sent.....

While waiting for our season debut I noticed a former front liner kicking off her new gig at Radford: FELGEMACHER 21 points and 21 rebounds in 28 minutes in their 61-31 win vs. SCSU

It is nice to see Savannah do well at Radford. I want our front line to do similar.

Sharing 200 minutes among a host of talented players is a really tough job for a coach.

Will be heading out soon to head down to the Burg for the game. Need to take the wife to the eye doctor first and then we will be hitting the road. Looking forward to a nice home crowd this evening.

LovethoseDukes have also seen issues with game notes from time to time and have also sent an email. Usually gets corrected fairly quickly.

jmuroadwarrior Nice to see Savannah doing well at Radford. Probably a good move for her as with the roster the Dukes have now I wonder how much playing time she would have gotten here. Was sorry to see her leave but probably the best move for all concerned.

Go Dukes!!

Real good first game of the season. They started holding GW scoreless for the first seven minutes of the game. The ladies never trailed in the game.
Defense was definitely the thing I noticed from the game. Very solid.
For the first game of the season, they had some real solid moments and could see hints of how good this team could be.
There were a few times their shooting went cold. It was a little concerning, but the positive was that they were taking good shots. I thought they were working really well as a team. I didn't get the feel that any of them were playing selfishly. However, there were times where Reynolds was open and instead of taking the shot she would look for someone else. I understand that's not her game, but I did want to see her shoot just a little more.
There seemed to be only a few moments where they were being too flashy and make a careless turnover. Last year that seemed to happen much more often, so hopefully that's a really good sign for the team this year. Aside from some mental errors, I felt like they played solid.
Overall, a great win for the Dukes. GW is no scrub and we looked like the better team. Plenty of stuff to improve on, but a really great start to what will hopefully be a great season.

Kamiah created a lot of offense by drawing the double team and kicking it out. She had a couple no-look passes that were impressive. The transition game was on point. The Reynolds-Smalls connection was real.

I thought Logan looked more focused than last year, but played with emotion late. She's so scrappy and made a ton of hustle plays.

Overall I thought the team looked really in shape and the conditioning was good. It will be interesting to see the chemistry improve, especially with the starters. The offense coming together along with the strong defense should make for an impressive season.

Kudos to the team for a good start to the season. I thought Barrier had a nice stretch in the 4Q that really sealed the W for us. The game was getting near a 1-possession game and we went through our 3rd significant drought of the game before she hit a 3 and then followed with a mid-range jumper that bumped the lead back out to a more comfortable margin.

As others have said, the D was solid. GW really only had 1 player that stood out and that was their point guard. Apparently, they lost a lot from last year's team.

Dukes travel to Delaware State Tuesday with a 7pm tip. Not sure if it will be streamed live yet. I'll check.

Parts of the game were not pretty, but overall (especially for a first game) I thought the team did well. As Wear Purple noted, Lexie seemed to hit another gear in the fourth quarter where the Dukes were struggling a little. Those two buckets seemed to give the team a new life and they finished the game strong.

Best part of the game was chatting with Kirby Burkholder and Lauren Jimenez and getting a brief hug from Tamera Young. Tamera will be inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight along with Paula Schuler Flamm and several other athletes. Great to see all of them! Tamera and Paula were recognized between the first and second quarter.

Box score random observations...

-70% of our scoring (35 of 50 pts) came from 3 players - Smalls, Barrier and Koshuta

-Logan Reynolds led the team in blocks with 4. LOL! She's on pace to block over 120 shots this season. :>)

-Reynolds line... 5 assists, 1 TO, 3 steals, 4 blocks, 1 face plant, another face plant...love watching her hustle. Give me 5 Logan Reynolds and we'll win a lot of games.

-GW shot 23.5% from the field, 16.7% from outside the arc, and 47.6% from the charity stripe...that's some butt ugly offense...give the Dukes some credit for defending, but against more skilled teams we won't see numbers that bad most likely.

Side notes, I though Aneah Young looked confident out there. And, I thought newcomer Maddy Green looked poised for her first collegiate game. Has a nice release on her shot. Looks confident. She has a year to learn before taking over for Reynolds most likely next year at the point. Reynolds should give her quite the inspiration of what's expected of the team leader at the PG position in the future.

Heaven forbid if everything said about JMU's Women's Basketball or Sean in not positive, but this is what I was saying was a necessary step for Sean and the program in another thread a month ago.

Last year we really had no great wins in OOC play and we under performed in the CAA tournament.

From an OOC standpoint Sean's first year was better than his second year. Again year one in the CAA tourney we got blown out.

It was Sean's first two years as a head coach taking over a top 40-50 program. It's totally understandable with injuries, youth, and his inexperience as a first time head coach we would have some bumps in the road.

Last night's game was a quality win. It was an at-large caliber win. It was a great start to the season. It's really what he and the program needed to sustain and grow the O'Regan era.

Could not ask for much more from night one.

If they pull off a very possible win streak to start the season this team could be getting more than a handful of top 25 votes come the UMD game in early December.

Very pleased with the girls win last night. Great start to the season. One note of caution though. We absolutely cannot have another season where a player is routinely putting up 15+ shots a game and only hitting 25% of them. We had that more than a few times last year. Last night, Barrier went 4-16. That's almost one third of our shot attempts. She shot 33% FG and 28% 3 pointers last year. Those numbers are bad by themselves, but really get magnified when it involves such a huge portion of our FG attempts. Time to start burying more shots or find away to get the ball to others who are having better success.

We actually did a pretty poor job of attacking their zone. We didn't move anybody into the middle of the zone around the free throw line and/or elbow areas. That's teachable and something I assume Coach O and staff will work on, though it is a head scratcher when you are starting a Sr. and 4 Jr's.

Obviously the Maryland game is big but the Dayton game is just as important if not more because it could really help us secure an at large berth. That Dayton team returns quite a few players from an A-10 regular season title and at large berth. I'm anxious to see this team grow from the big win last night. GO DUKES !!
