Players are wired differently. I could see wanting to play in the NCAA tourney, but who wouldn't want to actually play significant minutes? Its not like a freshman learning the ropes, its a guy that went from tons of mins to sitting on the bench. That would be frustrating for me.

RE: Trey Porter starting tonight for Nevada vs BYU
Does anyone have him on record as saying he went to Nevada-Reno to get to the NBA? Or perhaps get away from the ire of Jeff Jones? Or perhaps hoping for more playing time? Or specifically anything else?

I didn't hear him give any of those as reasons. Not saying I didn't miss an announcement though.

All I saw is a kid that graduated with eligibility left and decided to take the same option that hundreds of other graduates around the US are taking. Just hurts that he left OUR university but at least he went to a higher performing program. I dunno, but saying he left just to get a better shot at the NBA or wanted more playing time when they clearly had ballers in place sounds a little sour when you consider the reality of where Nevada was a year ago vs where we were.

Had to get away from the Refs. in the area. They were starting to T him up on a regular bases.

They weren’t manufacturing those technical fouls. He was ramping up the antics to create them as the season concluded.

I’m not really sure I understand this entire thread. You either want to be a Monarch or you don’t. I don’t wish him any bad luck, but who cares if you aren’t with ODU. I’m with the blue and silver.

I already saw him get one on a really egregious flagrant foul hook and hold at Nevada. It was ugly. He ended up fouling out with that one and technically ending up with 6 fouls.

I don't feel sour at all. You are correct that he was one of many graduate transfers moving around the country. However, I don't need a press release to tell me why a player leaves. Most, if not all, transfers are for basically 1 of 2 reasons: (#1) you want more playing time and (#2) you want to be part of a "better" program.

Now #1 should be standard for any D1 athlete in that real players just want to play. So if, in your current situation, you're not getting much playing time, transfer to a program that can give you a bigger/better role. And for those who have any real prospect of playing professionally, the more PT the more exposure for scouts.

#2 can be because you want to have a better season (e.g. NCAA tourney) than your current situation, and/or put you in a program with better opposition/better exposure for professional gains.

With that in mind, knowing what his current situation was at ODU, you can whittle down the reasons why he would go to Nevada.

Or 3) Nevada has an excellent grad program in whatever the eff he majored in at ODU, besides pouting and technical fouls.

Too bad it’s not as simple as big guy graduates and wants to play in a better program to make the NCAA and go to the NBA. Porter would’ve been unhappy wherever he went

Lol. Wonder what Mason thinks of him when he transferred to ODU. Don't really care but through the lens of only two options, I suppose we now know why ODU got him in the first place.

He had limited minutes as a freshman, then the coaching staff was fired (and they weren't doing well, and they still aren't doing well as a program). With that limited sample size, no large program was going to offer up a spot. For choosing ODU, I would assume the prospect of coming in and potentially being a 3yr starting, with significant PT throughout, was a large deciding factor. That and being close to his home town didn't hurt either.

1 point, 3 rebounds in 15 minutes tonight, and apparently, at least one flop good enough to get some national attention.

I saw the espn scroll on the bottom of the screen this morning say “officials looking into what caused tempers to flare after Nevada loses to Utah St.”. I immediately thought that it had to be instigated by Porter. Still haven’t seen the incident. Bad that it was my first thought when I saw it.

Here is the video
@RobDauster: This is nuts. Jordan Caroline appears to break glass, and the Nevada staff can he heard yelling at cops about fans touching their players during the court storm. https://twitter.com/JakeKUTV/status/1102...40/video/1

I havent followed them closely, but it appears Brown and Porter have lost PT to Thurman?

Would be a perfect story if they somehonw missed the tourney (almost no chance) and we made it.

Nevada and Utah State will both be in the tournament baring a major collapse in these last few games.

I watched Nevada's game last night with Utah State. Both teams looked very good to me. Better than anybody I have seen in CUSA this season. Both teams have guys that can shoot the 3, drive to the basket and finish, and hit free throws. They said during the game that Nevada hits 72% as a team from the FT line. Both teams have talented 6'-11" post players as well - Porter for Nevada and #23 for Utah State. They are currently the top 2 teams in the Mountain West after Utah State's win last night with Utah having a 1/2 game lead.

Nevada is a pretty solid team (so is Utah State). I believe they are more borderline top 25 than top 5 like they were pegged based on a magical tourney run. There are a decent 3 point shooting team, not great. Rebounding might be somewhat of an issue for them.

One thing I hate is they are a squad full of whiners, starting with the head coach.
